Dr Sir.
Your favour from Madison was duly receved
and you do me no more than justice in supposing
that my personal feeling towards you had undergone no change
by our political opposition. In politcks I freely concede to all
the privilege of judging and acting freely without questioning
the purity of their motives and I claim the same privilege
for myself.
On the receipt of your letter I wrote fully to Genl Drake
and would cheerfully write to others if I thought I could
do you any good but I have not learned the names of
the members and do not know of any that I can write
to with any prospect of advantage to you.
If the Presidential question should not be carried into
the election the local question will be the only one that
can operate to your disadvantage And what effect
that may have I am not prepared to say as I have heard
nothing on the subject. If I should be able to reach
Indianapolis I may possibly be of some service to you
and I assure you it would afford me great pleasure
to render you any in my power.
The land Sales are going on and I write in the
hurry of business in my office; if I had more
time for reflection I might possibly be able to
recollect some person to whom I could write to
advantage.
You will see Tipton at his lodge and I am per-
suaded he will render you all the service in his
power.
The Sales of last week accounted to upwards of
30 thousand dollars, this they will probably not be
half that Amt. but the month I think will go to
50 thousand.
With great respect
Yr friend and Sevrt
I. T. Canby
