TANNENBAUM - Max & Sol - Crawfordsville Journal Souvenir Edition 1894 - The clothing business as conducted by Tannenbaum Bros. ranks among the most important enterprises that are numbered with the city's commercial houses. Crawfordsville has her share of good, wideawake business men, men who have succeeded in building up a large trade and earned a patronage that belongs entirely to them, such as has given their store a widespread popularity. It is a model gents' furnishing house and every article of goods offered is sold with the return privilege if it is not just as represented. They sell their goods very cheap, their prices can not be discounted by any other firm. Every city has its representative men; including the leaders in politics, professions and trade, and especially is Crawfordsville forward in the latter direction, her leading citizens consisting in a large degree of young men who owe their enviable situations to their individual efforts. And in reviewing Crawfordsville today we should consider this edition incomplete did we not speak in commendation of the energy and activity of the men who built up Tannenbaum Bros. clothing house. The individual members are Sol C. Tannenbaum and Max T. Tannenbaum. They were both born in Germany and are endowed with the characteristics of the German race to a marked degree as relates to thrift and perseverance. 14 years ago they opened their present business and it has long ago proven a successful venture which has ripened into something more tangible and is recognized throughout the city and surrounding country as a high grade clothing establishment, one whose patronage is valued so much that no customer, however small may be the purchase, is treated with less than courteous attention and due consideration. Their natural inclinations to business pursuits and early beginning has been the source of acquiring a considerable knowledge of men and their characteristics, and early in life they had developed into first class salesmen. This, however, is perhaps the easiest part of their work, for goods well bought are half sold and if anything is done with greater care than any other part of the business of that establishment, it is the buying. They purchase their goods of the leading wholesale houses of the country, buy in large quantities, getting a good discount, buying goods as cheap as any house and with ready money and their long experience in the clothing business, assisted by close study of their patrons' wants, gives them a decided advantage in selecting their stock. They occupy elegant display rooms, 115 and 117 Main Street as their brick building is large and they occupy both stores. They opened the first clothing house in Crawfordsville, their rooms are elegantly fitted and handsomely furnished and profusely lighted and they carry a novel stock of the latest style goods in the market. This comprises the latest thing in dress suits, prettiest and neatest cloth for a business of traveling suit with a very complete stock of furnishing goods, shirts, collars, cuffs, ties, hose, underwear, in fact everything that enters the wardrobe of the most stylish attired gentleman. The proprietors make the tastes and desires of their customers a personal study and strive to please in every possible way. They claim to be able to suit any with the latest styles and if it is not in stock, give prompt attention to your order. Everything is kept neat, clean and orderly and the firm secured a hold on the people's trade that bids unbounded success for the future.

Crawfordsville Journal 8-6-1914 p 4 - Fear for the safety of near relatives in Austria is mingled with a desire to see Germany the victor in the great European conflict is the view of Lee S. Warner, well known local clothier. Mr. Warner who was born in Austria but who left that country while a young boy has a brother, Guttlieb Werner and two nephews now residing in Austria. The local man's brother owns a large bank in Vienna, one of the few private banks in the country and the two nephews are officers in the Austrian Army. Both will have an active part in the fighting. Not only will their lives and those of their parents be ending, in the conflict which has now begun but the business of Mr. Warner's brother will probably be seriously affected if not completely destroyed. "During the past few days I have been worrying a great deal about my brother and his family," said Mr. Warner today. "I have not heard from them for more than two weeks now and Vienna, the place where they lives is likely to be the scene of some of the most important war maneuvers. I wish they were all safe out of the country." Despite the fact that he is a native of Austria and his relatives are now residing in that country Mr. Warner is anxious for the Germans to win over all the countries in the great struggle. Moreover he firmly believes that the war will result in a German victory but he anticipates a decided change in the government of Germany at the end of the war .. How the Austrian young men are forced to join the army and be prepared to fight at any minute was told by the local man who intimated that the lives of Austrians are not their own but the property of their country.America would not like the Austrians or their ways. Fritz Warner the younger nephew was in this country a few years ago and visited his uncle here .. Mr. Warner expects the conflict to be over within 6 months. Obituary - 11-3-1921 Lee S. Warner, senior member of the firm of Warner & Peck, clothiers, died at his home, 706 E. Main at 6:20 o'clock this morning after suffering an illness of two weeks' duration from heart disease which was complicated towards the last by an attacKnights of Pythiasneumonia. He was one of the best known business men in the city and was the founder of the clothing firm which bears his name and that of his son-in-law, Dumont M. Peck. A Masonic service will be conducted at the Temple Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock to which the public is invited. The body will lie in state at the temple from 1 o'clock. After the services the remains will be taken by the family to Buffalo, NY where burial will be made at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Leopold S. Warner was born in Austria, near Vienna, July 26, 1849. At age 30 he returned to Buffalo and entered the manufacturing business in the firm of Warner, Selliek & Warner, manufacturers of trousers. In Jan 1893, he came to Crawfordsville and purchased the clothing store of Joly Joel. He conducted the business until 1900 when he formed a partnership with his son-in-law, Dumont M. Peck under the name of Warner & Peck. He was active in the business of the firm until his death. He was married to Rachel Wiener of Buffalo on Aug 21, 1873 who with 3 children, Mrs. Juliet Warner Peck of Crawfordsvi

WEBER, Ernest Brunno --Crawfordsville Journal 8-16-1907 - was born Oct 18, 1849 in Saxon Germany. He came to America in 1870 and settled in Philadelphia. Later he came west and took up his residence in Veedersburg, Ind then removed to Crawfordsville where he died Aug 12, 1907. He came of a family of 11 of whom he was the only one to emigrate to America. He was united in marriage with Helen Clark Oct 18, 1893. To this union was born on child, Gue Helen, who with the wife and two stepdaughters, Capitola Chadwick and Ferris Clark Weber, both of whom he loved as his own, survive. Soon after landing in the US he was converted and united with the UB Church. About 17 years ago he took the vows of an Odd Fellow, in which order he remained faithful until death. His thrift and business ability are attested by his beautiful residence on the corner of Woodlawn & Pike. His home was one of the chief ends in life, he having selected the bricks therein with his own hands. Early in life he became a student of nature and cultivated in all his power her beauty. It was with great expectancy he looked forward to the new church of his denomination now under way of construction to which he often referred. His great and mastering desire was to cause others as little trouble as possible and help as many as lay in his power.
