Walter LAMSON

Waveland Independent
Waveland, Montgomery County, Indiana
Jan 26, 1939

There seems to be hardly an item of world news that does not have a Waveland connection. Just now the island of Guam, away off in the Pacific is talked of for a new Gibralter. This island, which is about as large as Vermillion County and about the same shape is important as a way station for the China Clippers, and in enemy hands would cut us off from quick connection with the Orient. Walter LAMSON with the Navy medical service at San Pedro, California was stationed for a time on the island which has five villages. A picture in the July issue of National Geographic Magazine shows him giving first aid to a little Guamite, they are called Chamorros, who has broken her arm. The caption says; "Now don't fall out of the swing again." A paragraph from the text which is beautifully illustrated says, "The pharmacist mate, second class in charge the health department outpost at Agat, on the west coast of Guam sets broken arms and treats many ailments. He also vaccinates villagers, enforces health and sanitary regulations and performs the duties of midwife if occasion demands."

Ensign Walter LAMSON, mentioned Monday in an Associated Press dispatch from NY as having received the Purple Heart decoration, has been in the navy 13 years. He is a graduate of WHS and enlisted soon after graduation. Ensign Lamson who was on a destroyer sunk in the Pacific late last year was adrift six hours on a raft before being picked up. It is presumed the Purple Heart is for heroism during that attack. Lamson's mother, Mrs. Mae Lamson is living with her daughter, Mrs. Vera Olson in Indianapolis. He has two brothers, George B. Lamson, Crawfordsville and Glenn of LaPorte. Lamson and his wife and their 9-year old daughter visited relatives here in January. He is now with a hospital unit in NY.
