Norman Jarvis

Tri-County News, Nov 7, 1957

The Machledt & Servies Funeral Home in Waveland was very extensively damaged by fire late Wednesday evening when a blaze started in an upstairs apartment and almost completely destroyed the second story of the frame building. It was believed the fire started from a gas refrigerator. Waveland School Principal, Victor Pence, who lives across the street was reported to have discovered the building was afire and immediately reported the fact. William Machledt and Larry Servies, operators of the funeral home, were working in another part of the building at the time. The Waveland Volunteer Fire Department at once responded to the call for help, but the blaze was so far advanced that fire fighting equipment from Russellville and Crawfordsville was summoned. The blaze was brought under control in about 45 minutes. Several thousands of dollars worth of damage was done to the building and furnishings. An apartment occupied by Lulu Smith was completely destroyed as were the furnishings. At the time of the blaze, the body of Norman Jarvis was in the funeral home awaiting rites which were scheduled for Friday. The body was taken to the porch of a nearby home (Cooks) and later removed to the Davies Funeral home in Marshall where services will be held as originally scheduled.
