Yesterday about half past 12 Charles Gearhart met with a horrible death at the saw mill near Pleasant View. His clothes caught in the shaft which runs the big saw, drawing him in and beating his body against the ground, causing instant death. His neck and back were both broken. Gearhart is about 27 years old and unmarried.

Charles Gearhart, the young man killed at Pleasant View last week, was the only son of well-to-do parents who live at North Liberty near south Bend. On account of some misunderstanding he had not been staying at home. He had been running the edger saw two days when the accident occurred. The sawyer was setting his saw and the engineer was working on his pump, so no one saw just how it happened, but it is supposed that his clothing caught on a set-screw in the saw mandrel which was revolving at the rate of 450 times per minute. His neck, back, arm and foot were broken and almost the entire surface of the body bruised; but there were no extensive lacerations. A heavy tool box against which the body struck in revolving, was broken to pieces and the tools scattered about. Death was probably almost instantaneous and had the engine been stopped immediately it would have made no difference. Mr. Knott, one of the proprietors of the mill, accompanied the body to North Liberty.
