Mrs. Lindsey D. Hanna died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Frank Belton in Oglalla, Neb, June 14, after a lingering illness. She was the daughter of Benjamin and Lucinda Garland and was born on the old Grand Army of the Republic (GAR)land homestead now owned by CR Dryer. She is survived by one brother, Perry Grand Army of the Republic (GAR)land, and by one sister, Mrs. Frank Belton. After her marriage to Mr. Hanna, she lived for a time on the farm W. of town now owned by Doren Clore. The following Biography is from the Keith County, Neb. News: "Mrs. Hanna's maiden name was Dorothy Ann Grand Army of the Republic (GAR)land. She was born in Waveland, Indiana on April 24, 1839. Her early home was on a farm and she was one of 8 children. She was a student at the Indiana Collegiate Institute and after graduation taught botany and astronomy there. Near to her home was Crawfordsville, the home of Gen. Lew Wallace, who wrote Ben Hur. Gen. Wallace and his wife were intimate friends of the Hannas as young people. After Mrs. Hanna's marriage in Nov, 1863, they moved to Wichita, Ks then to Beatrice of this state and finally came here to Ogalalla in 1884. In spite of poor health, Mrs. Hanna took prominent part in the best interests of the town. She was a charter member of the Oglalla chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and was always a faithful and conscientious worker for the good of the Order. She filled the offices of Chaplin, Sec, Assoc. Matron and was the third Worthy matron, serving two years to the great benefit of the Order. She united with the First Congregational Church here April 18, 1897, Easter Sunday. Other members have testified to how regular she was in her pew at the Church on every Sunday as long as her health enabled her to come. There remains of her home family one brother and one sister, Mrs. FM Belton of this place out of a family of 8 children. Having no children of their own they brought up two and started them in life. Mrs. Hanna passed away at 7:15 p.m. at the home of her sister, and the funeral was held at the Congregational Church Friday, 16th., Rev. Warren Morse conducting the services at the Church. A quartet of Easter Star sang. The service at the Cemetery was conducted by the officers of the Easter Star."
