Vern Garland in service

J.O. Rosebaum received a letter from Vern Garland the first of the week bearing date of Nov. 14. He is at present in London, England with the "Princess Pats," Canadian Light Infantry under final training before being sent into the trenches in France. He attempted to enter the American service but was rejected on account of defective vision in one eye, but was able to get into the above famous company that has distinguished itself on the field in many of the battles of the past few years.

Mr. and Mrs. Vern Garland of Glendale, California are guests of Tom Garland & Friends and relatives this week. Mr. Garland's father was born near the Shades but finally moved west where his son Vern was born. He had been a member of the Waveland Masonic Lodge for 44 years and is a retired employee of the Southern California Edison Co. Mr. and Mrs. Garland are on a tour of the country in general but are on their way east at the present time. In honor of his visit the Masonic Lodge conferred the Master Mason Degree with the aid of Masons from Russellville; Crawfordsville; Alamo; Waynetown and Marshall after which refreshments were served.
