BIOGRAPHY

William Farmer

William Farmer, who died Oct. 18, was born in the old house on the David Fullenwider place W. of town. His parents moved to Waveland and lived for a time on the corner now occupied by the C.H. Johnson residence. They later moved to a farm near Prairieton south of Terre Haute. Mr. Farmer has always maintained with great price the old homestead of 280 acres which is yet a part of his estate. Mr. Farmer passed away at the age of 82 years and 23 days and was laid away at Highland Lawn Cemetery, Terre Haute. He was the youngest child of William and Eliza Farmer of a family of six children, having two brothers, Hiram and George and three sisters, Eliza Hutton, Emma Bently and Sarah Farmer. These all preceded him in death. he was united in marr. to Miss Maggie Oldshue, Oct. 27, 1875. These years were happy years for Mr. and Mrs. Farmer with one exception and that was the death of their little girl, Vinca Fern, who died at the age of four months and 21 days. He became a member of the New Harmony Baptist Church early in life and continued in its fellowship until the organization dissolved. He was a lover of home and family. he leaves to mourn his loving and devoted wife, Maggie, as he always called her, many nephews and nieces besides many friends and neighbors. In the early 70s Mr. Farmer and Moses Carr built what is known as the Henderson House on South Fourth Street. Later Mr. Farmer sold his interest to Mr. Carr. Then he bought the property at the Corner of Fifth and Ohio Sts, what is known as the Farmer Building. He was a charter member and stockholder in the Citizens Trust Co. He was loved and respected for his honesty, truth and probity. A nephew, William Farmer, will live with Mrs. Farmer and keep up the home in Terre Haute.
