Mrs. Lode Whitson has been given $5000
damages for the drowning of her husband at Broad Ripple last summer.
Whitson was a passenger on the excursion steamer Sunshine. The boat sank
and the other passengers waded ashore, but Whitson failed to escape.
[Notes:
White City was a pleasure garden with many amenities including rides on
the White River. It was located at Broad Ripple on the "far" north side
of Indianapolis. By the 1940's it was gone. Ultimately the land became
Broad Ripple Park -- no rides (unless you count crawling over the old
steam locomotive). Even the old carousel is gone: it became part of the
Children's Museum when that was still on 30th Street. Kathy]
