West - Thomas (Dr)

Source: Zach, Karen Bazzani.  Montgomery Medicine Menn ....  Crawfordsville: MCHS, 2002.

Thomas West was listed as a physician, age 21 (born in Indiana) in the 1850 Franklin Township census presumably living with his parents, Jeremiah age 52 born in Kentucky and Matilda, age 47, born in Ohio along with what is assumed his brother, age 14 born in Indiana.  This may or may not be the Thomas West who married Maria L. Lee on Christmas Day, 1855.  Dr. West could not be found in the 1860 Indiana census.  - note he is listed in the 1860 below that I found years later

Note:   A Thomas J. West is found on an ancestry tree (Browne-Himmelsbach Peach Tree revision 2015) listing Dr. Thomas J. west born 3 August 1828 in Montgomery, USA and died 12 June 1902 in Union, SC married Mary Louise Lee 25 Dec 1855.  Note this is fairly suredly him - died 12 June 1901 however not 1902 in Union Township, Montgomery County, Indiana not SC.

He is Thomas J. West in the Crawfordsville 1860 census age 31 - Mary l. 20 Ellen 3; Franklin 2; and -- West 6 months (Fred)  - he is a teacher in this census, quite a versatile man -- all born Indiana.  He has $5,000 worth of real estate and $1,000 of personal property.  Pretty good.

Source: 1870 census A Thomas West age 41 lives in Union Twp, Montgomery County and is listed as a farmer. Mary age 30 is his wife which would make her 15 when they married in 1855 if this is the correct Thomas.  His being a farmer does not bother me as often the physicians did two jobs.  Since he has a Jerry (see census 1850 above) age 9 (along with Ellen, 14; Frank 12; Fred 11; Sallie 7 Bruce 5 and Joel 3) he could have named Jerry for his father, Jeremiah so I feel this is likely him.

The community was surprised and shocked this morning to learn of the death of Thomas J. West, which occurred at 8 o'clock last night at his country home, two miles NE of the city.  Mr. West was unusually rugged for one of his years and was in his customary good health up to last Sunday.  While at dinner he was taken suddenly sick and sank gradually until last evening when dissolution came.  His demise was due to a compmlication of liver and bowel trouble.  By his death Montgomery County loses one of her best citizens, a man toward whom all could point with pride.  Thomas West was born near Mace August 3, 1828 and was a life long resident of the county. On Christmas Day, 1855, he was united in marriage to Mary Louise Lee, the daughter of Joel Lee. SHe died nearly 25 years ago and Mr. West never remarried.  8 children survive the father, namely, Benjamin F; Fred W; Jere; Bruce; Joe; Bert; Mrs. Sarah McCullough and Mrs. Ella Gehring. The latter lives at Las Veagas, New Mexico and Mrs. McCullough at Irvinton, cal. The eldest son, Dr. B.F. West is a Methodist missionary and has been laboring for years near Singapore, but arrived home a few weeks since to spend the summer. The other sons live in the county, Jere West being judge of the circuit court. Although ot a member of any church Mr. West was a believer in the Christian religion and a man of strong convictions. He had a high moral standard and lived up to it and no man ever called to question his honesty of fidelity.  He was a man of superior intelligence and a life long student.  He was educated a physician and practiced for a time but gave it up to manage his own fine farm.  Mr. West was active in public affairs and was county commissioner for six years.  The funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the country home, ELder Oliphant officiating. The burial will take place at Oak Hill under the auspices of the Masonic orders. - transcribed by kbz
