Sterret - Joseph

Joseph Edmond Sterrett was born in Carroll County, Indiana 7 Nov 1842 the son of Samuel and Isaabella from Juanita County, PA) from a family of an even dozen and enlisted in Co H 38th Indiana at age 19 in Montgomery County on the 5th day of December in 1861.  He was wounded in the Battle of Jonesboro, GA during the Atlanta Campaign in 1864.  Before the end of the war he would be commissioned as a Sgt.  Then later a 2nd Lt. but mustered out as a Sgt. Again.  Afterwards, he became a physician and practiced medicine in Burrows and Logansport (for about 20 years and where he was active in the First Presbyterian Church) before relocating in Los Angeles, California in 1902. He died at the age of 78 on September 7, 1921. Friends were requested to attend the service at the Chapel of Parke & Chase, but it was requested no flowers.  Buried in Angelus Rosedale Cemetery.  He married Susan Amanda Little in Carroll County and they had at least two daughters, Anna and Elsie.  

 

Note: He really didn't live in Montgomery County as far as I can tell but did enlist here and lived not far away before moving to LA.

H, 38th Indiana Infantry on Dec. 5, 1861; wounded at the Battle of Jonesboro, GA on Sept 1, 1864; promoted to 3RD SGT, April 1, 1865; promoted to regimental commissary SGT, June 1, 1865; veteran; promoted to 2ND LT June 1, 1865; mustered out as a commisary SGT, July 15, 1865.

Married Miss Amanda S. Little (1843-1918) on May 6, 1869; two daughters Anna V. (1877-1943) and Elsie Isabel (1879-1958); was a practicing physician in Burrows, IN and Logansport, IN for more than 24 years combined; residence at time of 1870 & 1880 US Censuses: Rock Creek Twp., Carroll Co., IN; applied for a federal pension June 26, 1889 app. #713,335 cert. #486,982; moved to Los Angeles Co., CA in 1902
