The candidate for treasurer is a native of this county, the son of David Shular, a Ripley Township farmer and local preacher. He worked on a farm till he was grown, when he attended several terms of school at Bloomingdale under the tuition of B. C. Hobbs. After teaching school awhile he commenced clerking in 1853 for Joseph Milligan at Waveland for $100 per year, and rose by the regular line of promotion to be a partner in the concern. About the year 1862, failing health compelled him to quit the mercantile business and purchasing a small farm in Parke County he engaged in the stock business. After a year or two he formed a partnership with Joseph Milligan and purchased the Rockport Mill property in Parke County, attached to which was a store, a small town and eight hundred acres of land. On Mr. Shular’s shoulders devolved the onerous burden of the entire management of the flouring mills, saw mill, store and farms, and no better evidence of his business capacity is needed than the fact that he run, managed and wound up the whole concern successfully, to the satisfaction of his partner. Mr. Shular now resides on a small farm near the north line of Scott Township. - kbz
