Sidney Allen Speed was born in Crawfordsville on the 25th of June in 1846.  He died in the same place 12 July 1923 of Lombar pneumonia and arterior sclerosis at the age of 77 years and 17 days.  He served in the 18th Ind Battery during the Civil War.  Supposedly (but I can't picture this - kbz) he picked up a fired shot from a Confederate cannon and hurled it over a house to save the men in his area from probably death and dismemberment.  An Indiana congressman put in for the Medal of Honor in 1916 but Sidney refused it. Several buildings in Crawfordsville's area were built by Speed, including Lew Wallace's 30' grave monument (via findagrave).

He and his brother, Bruce purchased a lead mine in Joplin, Missouri and developed it.  At the time they sold it they made just enough money for their time, effort, labor and expenses. eir time, labor and expense to develping it and Sidney remained in Joplin to look out for another.  Not sure what the outcome to that was.
