John STUMP, farmer and stock raiser, Crawfordsville, eldest son and second child of George and Martha (TALBOT) Stump, was b. in Boone Co, Ky May 8, 1820. Eight years afterward the family settled in Rush Co, IN and in 1830 removed to Montgomery co, and improved a farm in Union Twp, 3/4 of a mile soutH. W. est of the present residence of Mr. Stump. The country was then covered by deep forests, and settling in the green woods, Mr. Stump helped his father clear his farm and make a comfortable home. When he began to do for himself he worked first by the day and at length hired out for a year. At the end of this term of service, he was able to buy 80 acres of timberland. He has accumulated a sufficient competence for his old age. His farm of 230 acres lies six and one-half miles soutH. W. est of Crawfordsville; 150 acres are under cultivation and in pasture. It is worth $9,000. He was marr. to Sibella A. FARLEY Dec 22, 1846. She was b. April 30, 1821, and d. Nov 17, 1871, having borne 7 children: Robert, b. Dec 18, 1847, marr. Laurinda A. PAYTON Aug 6, 1871; Martha Catherine, b. June 28, 1849 marr. David PAYTON Jan 18, 1866; William H, b. Jan 19, 1851, marr. Luela NORTHCUTT Aug 15, 1875 she died April 14, 1876 and he Sept. 22, 1878; Mary Eliz, b.. July 8, 1855; George W. and Rebecca Ann, March 11, 1859, the latter was marr. to William GRUBBS Sept 23, 1875 and Jennie b. Feb 22, 1864. Mr. Stump was marr. again June 24, 1873 to Elizabeth HOPKINS, widow of Jacob ROUTH and David HOEL. She was b. in Clinton Co, Ohio June 30, 1832. 15 years ago she united with the Christian Church but since her marr. to Mr. Stump has become a member of the united Brethren Soc, to which he has belonged the last 5 years. Mr. Stump draws his political inspiration from the old time tenets and practices of the democratic party, and cast his first vote for pres. for James K. POLK 1844.

John Stump died at two o'clock this morning at his home in North Union. His age was the cause of his death, the deceased being 82 years old. He was born in Kentucky, but the family moved to his county when John was very young and he has been a resident of this county ever since. He leaves two sons and three daughters to mourn his death. They are R. W. Stump, of this county, G. W. Stout [sic - Stump], of southern Illinois, Mrs. Martha Peyton, Mrs. Rebecca Grubbs and Miss Mary Stout [sic - Stump], all of this city. The deceased has two brothers and one sister living, Robert and William, of North Union, and Mrs. Anna Tyler of New Market. The funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at Union Chapel. Interment will be at Weir cemetery, southwest of the city.
