Smart - James F.

Source: Zach, Karen Bazzani.  Montgomery Medicine Men and ...  Crawfordsville: MCHS, 2002

James F. Smart was born October 9, 1819 in North Carolina.  He was a small, active man and a practical joker.  His favoritism was for drink, but it was said he never got too drunk to administer to his patients, thus the community loved im so much that they named the town of Smartsburg for him.  His tiny office sat up on the hill, right next to the road.  He and his wife, Hester, had at least three children: Cornelia; George and Charles.  During the Civil War, he served as a Surgeon and afterwards was in partnership with A.W. Armstrong.  There is speculation that his father was his mentor.

Note: a bit more
1850 Franklin Twp, Montgomery County, Indiana he had his son (I assume) James F. age 17 and Andrew J. McIntosh age 20 who are both studying medicine under Smart.
Note 2 -- although I have a specific birth date for James F. Smart it does not jive with the 1850 census above - he is age 42 Physician $150 NC and his wife is Ann M. 52 NC  then the two boys

I also have him in the Civil War as a surgeon but can not prove that either - sorry -- he is found in Bowen's Montgomery County history on page 340.
