George SLEPPY, a Civil War veteran, first came to Kansas with his family from Crawfordsville, Indiana about 1872. They traveled with a caravan that settled northeast of Cherryvale. After a year or two, they returned to Indiana. In 1876, they again came to Kansas settling on a farm in a community southeast of Wellsville on Bull Creek known as Wade's Branch. Mr. Sleppy farmed and did carpentry work until his death in 1888. His son Milton then took over the farm and also did carpentry work. A daughter, Lusetta, was appointed postmistress of the Wade's Branch Post Office and rode horseback to Paola twice a week to get the mail. Tiring of farm life, Milt moved the family to Osawatomie and then to Wellsville about 1900. He worked for the railroad until 1908 and then as a carpenter helping to build many of the houses in Wellsville. Milt was also town marshal and janitor at the school for many years. His daughter, Lela Wiggins, served as the first woman city clerk in Wellsville. Her son, Larry, resides in the Wellsville area.
In 1909, Milt Sleppy and his family moved to their home on East 5th Street and the property remained in the family until 1959 when it was sold to Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Stonequist. This house at 113 East 5th had been Wellsville's first hotel and is the oldest home in town having been remodeled a number of times.
