Word reached here on Friday afternoon that was dead in
Peoskey, Michigan where he had gone with his nephew, Dallas Henry
of Veedersburg on an auto trip. Matthew Simms left immediately
for that place. On arrival he found that his father had been
shot. His nephew returned to the tent in which they were camping
on the city camping grounds after a short absence and found him
lying across a cot, dead, with a bullet hole in his head above
his right ear. he summoned the police and the coroner who
returned a verdict of suicide, although there were no powder
burns to show the shooting was at close range. The body reached
here on Monday evening. Funeral services were held at the home on
Tuesday afternoon, in charge of Rev. OS Stewart. The body was
then taken to Waynetown for burial.
The following obituary was
read: Charles Edward Simms, the son of William H. Simms and Ellen
Hobson Simms born near Sullivan Indiana May 29th, 1860. Departed
this life Sept 9, Petoskey Mich where he had bone about two weeks
ago for his failing health, age 61Y3M11D. With his parents moved
to Montgomery Co in 1862 with the exception of about 4 years in
Peoria Ill he spent his entire life in this County. He received
his education and grew to manhood at Waynetown. At the age of 27
years he was marr. to Susan Anna Scott to this union were born
two sons, William A. Simms of Waveland and Mathew S. Simms of
Crawfordsville. With his family he moved to Waveland in 1908
where he has been connected with the business interest of the
town and community. He leaves to mourn, the widow, two sons and
their families, two grandsons and two granddau, he leaves 3
sisters, Mrs. John S. Thompson of Waynetown, Mrs. DS Cade of
Veedersburg and Mrs. EP Shaw of Crawfordsville. Two brothers,
Herbert H. Simms of Chicago ill and Harry P. Simms, Schneider,
also many relatives and a host of friends. Those present from a
distance were: Mrs. Lena Cade, Miss Helen Cade and Enoch Simms of
Veedersburg; Mr. & Mrs. John Thompson and Ray Thompson of
Waynetown; Mrs. Sue Shaw of Crawfordsville; Harry P. Simms of
Schneider, Daniel and Charles Simms and Mr. & Mrs. Jack
Daskum of Lafayette; Herbert Simms of Chicago; Mr. & Mrs.
John Mendenhall and daughters of Mecca; Mrs. Beulah Mitchell of
Newtown; LW Scott of Kingman and Mrs. WIll Weese of Brazil. - typed by kbz

C.E. Simms went to Lebanon Monday to assist Joe Kelley in a balloon ascension. The intention was to take two men up, tandem, on two parachutes and make a double drop. The weight of the extra man and parachute broke Kelly's hold when he was about 40' in the air. He fell on his side but escaped without any broken bones.
