Effective as of Jan 31, 1950, Mr. Ira J. SHARP has been
retired from the mail service after 33 years as rural route man.
He entered the service Jan 31, 1917 when it was necessary to use
a horse and buggy part of the time when the roads thawed out in
the spring when old dobin was sometimes put to, to make the 28
miles of the route in a day. After the roads and the automobiles
were improved sufficiently the two routs out of Waveland were
united and renumbered he took the present route of 70 miles and
was seldom relieved because of sickness or for other reasons
except for vacation. In this manner he managed to unwind a lot of
highway and wear out a number of automobiles. But for the last
several months his health has not been good, though he is greatly
improved, he does not feel capable of tackling his old job as
mail carrier where his patrons will regret his retirement. John
Gilliland, who has been acting as assistant will be acting
carrier for the present. Note: Fred Bazzani received the highest
score of the civil service test and took over this route later
that year. - kbz
