Thomas W. Rice was born to Jonathan & Mary Glenn Rice in the Freedom Area a nd to this union another son, Albert was born. On March 5, 1899 Thom as wa smarr to Zella Dee Patton. In their early years they lived on a fa rm on Oak HIll Rd. Tom bred & raced fine horses during old county fair yea rs. Later they moved into C'ville.  He entered politics and was elected Sh eriff one term 1928-1932 and lived in what is now known as the Old Jail Mu seum on North Washington st. He also served as POlice Chief two terms aft er which he was state parole officer for several years. Following retireme nt from politics he owned & operated Crawfordsville Bus Co.  Tom & Aunt De e, by which names they were callecd by most people who knew them were wide ly known & respected. Albert who married Toadie Stilwell, had one son, Tho mas. They were farmers and lived on SR 234 NE of Bronws Valley for many ye ars. Submitted by Dannie Rice.

Thomas Rice, 87, Former Chief Of Police Here Dies

Thomas W. Rice, 87, former Montgomery County sheriff and former Crawfordsv ille chief of police, died Saturday afternoon in his home here.  He had be en in failing health four years.  Born April 8, 1875 Mr. Rice was the s on of Jonathan and Mary Glenn Rice.  he married Zella Dee Patton of Brow ns Valley March 5, 1899.  A native of Montgomery County and a reside nt of Crawfordsville most of his life, Mr. Rice served two terms as sheriff and two terms as chief of police.  He also was a probation officer f or Indiana State Prison at Michigan City for a number of years and owner a nd operator of the Crawfordsville Bus Line several years.  Mr. Rice w as a member of the Freedom Baptist Church and a 50-year member of Montgome ry Lodge No. 50, F&AM.  The widow, Mrs. Zella Rice survives.  Funeral serv ices will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Hunt and Son Funeral Home.  Rev. Carlton Christenson of the First Baptist Church will be the officiating minister.  Burial will be at the Masonic Cemetery.  Friends may ca ll at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Monday.
