Only a census record indicates that John Prettyman, age 34 (1870 Coal Creek TOwnship) was a physician and born in Ohio. His wife, it is assumed, Lucy A, was born in Indiana as were their three children: Clifton, age 3; Ernest 2; and Edith born in March of the census year. It is believed he went on to Stockwell in TIppecanoe County.

His parents were John S. Prettyman and Adelle Flury. Father, John was also a physician and may have had his son as an apprentice. There were at least five Prettyman children.
In 1900, working their way West, they are in Melvern, Osage County, Kansas (Family 291)

Just to California in the 1910 census before passing away he died there 19 May 1910 at Bakersfield, Kern County, California and is buried in the Bakersfield cemetery. He was a widower in the census and the following children were listed : Gertrude; Clinton W; Ernest M; Edith E; Susie; Warren and Kate.

A jury called by Deputy Coroner Mullins held an inquest today at the undertakng parlors of Morton & Connelley and found that John T. Prettyman, the vunerable resident of Shafter, who died suddenly a couple of days ago had come to his death through age and physical incapacity. The funeral service took place at Morton & Connelly's parlors and was conducted by Rev. Snudden of the North Methodist Church. Interment was at Union Cemetery.
