PEFFLEY, Zachariah, farmer, Ladoga, son of John & Mary M. (ROBINSON)
Peffley, was b. in this township Sept. 24, 1834. His education was received in
the public schools of the County, and consisted of a thorough training in the elementary
branches. In 1857 he was marr. to Miss Sarah J, daughter of John BARNETT. She
died in Nov 1861 and Sept 11, 1862 Mr. P. was marr. to Miss Nancy, daughter of
Samuel PARKHURST. She was b. in Henry, IN June 23, 1837. They have become the
parents of 6 children: Sarah A; Artie I; Emery A; Albert Z; Lydia B. and Omer
L. Mr. P. is actively engaged in farming and stock raising on his farm one and
a half mi. NE of Ladoga. His parents are still living, and are among the
earliest settlers now living in this part of the County, having located here in
1831. They came from Va and reached here when the co. was but sparsely settled.
His father was b. April 11, 1803 but his mother not until Jan 11, 1808. On Aug
7, 1842, his father, while returning home from a short distance W. of his
residence in co. with two of his sons, was badly crippled by a tree falling on
them from behind. He has since been unable to work on account of the affair.
One of the boys, aged 7 years was killed outright. Mrs. Peffley has suffered
much during the past two years from a severe stroke of palsy, which was worried
her watchful husband and respecting children to an unmeasured degree. PEFFLEY,
Zachariah; PO Ladoga; Farmer & Stock raiser; was b. on Sec 8 of this
township, 1824. Sept. 24, 1857, married Sarah J. BARRETT. Was again married,
Sept 11, 1862 to Nancy PARKHURST; children's naes; Sarah A; Artie E; Emory A;
Albert Z; Lydia B and Omer L. Mr. P. was drafted to serve in the late civil
war, but furnished a substitute. Is the owner of the sorghum mill.

PEFFLEY (son of No. 551 ) married: 1--Sept. 24th, 1857 at Ladoga, SARAH JANE
BARNETT, born Dec. 19th, 1839, died Nov. 3rd, 1861, buried in Harshbarger
Cemetery. (daughter of JOHN BARNETT). 2--Sept. 3rd, 1862, at Ladoga, NANCY
PARKHURST, born in Henry Co., Ind., June 23rd, 1838, died Aug. 17th, 1904 at El
Dorado, Kansas. (daughter of SAMUEL and SARAH (Wright) PARKHUURST). Sarah was
born Dec. 24th, 1812, died Mar. 16th, 1895, buried in Harshbarger Cemetery,
Ladoga. 3--April 18th, 1907 MRS. MARY LINES. Zachariah is buried in Belle Vista
Cemetery, Eldorado, Kansas. A sketch of Zachariah's life is in Beckwith's
History of Mont. Co., Ind., Clark Twp., Pub. 1889, page 463. His childhood,
youth and young manhood was that of a rugged frontiersman. He was engaged in
farming and stock-raising, his farm being one and one half miles northeast of
Ladoga. Here he built a large brick house which is still standing. He also
owned a sorghum mill. All the children were born on the old homestead. Mr.
Peffley was drafted to serve in the Civil War but furnished a substitute. In
1886 he moved to Butler Co., Kan., and located on Cedar Lane Farm three miles
north of El Dorado, where the children grew to manhood and womanhood. In 1914
he moved to Eldorado where he resided until his death. He was a member of the
Methodist church and an Odd Fellow for fifty years.
