A native of Brown County, Ohio, Joseph W. Newlin came to our county to the Waynetown area but was here only briefly . He married here (2nd marriage, first being to Johana Calvert) on March 13, 1851 (Bk 3 p 333) to Mry Brant. It is here the couple had two children, Patrick "Henry" (became a druggist in the Wallace area) and Ella. At Waynetown, he studied medicine under Dr. Samuel Green and practiced here thereafter for a couple of years. After receiving the appointment of postmaster in Shawnee, Fountain County, they moved there and are found in the 1860 census in Logan Township. At this time, he had 415,000 worth of real estate and $10,000 worth of personal propert, rather unusual as per the personal worth. When he removed to Attica, he went into partnership with Dr. Leyman and remained so until he died in 1868, aged 48 years. He is buried in Salem Cemetery, Davis Township, Fountain County, Indiana.
