Eual McCAULEY, Waveland's 29-year-old coach is now beginning
the second year as the Hornet's mentor and though his basketball
success last year was not very acceptable, he believes this
year's team is going to be substantially improved. Eual, a native
of Alabama, stepped into a difficult role as to the happiness
with coaches when he followed Cliff Davis and James Hanna who had
enjoyed some very lush years with the Waveland basketball teams.
Albertsville, Alabama is Coach McCauley's home town and after his
growing up years and elementary education, he attended
Jacksonville Alabama State Teachers College which he received his
AB Degree. He then won his Masters degree from George Peabody
College at Nashville, Tennessee and he also done a year of work
afterwards on his Doctor's degree at the same school. Eual also
put in three years in the medical corps with the US Navy, being
stationed at several places in this country. It was while he was
on a tour of duty in Washington, DC that he met Roberta Jones,
now Mrs. McCauley who came from near Waynetown while she was a
member of the WAVES. The McCauleys have a four-year-old daughter.
Eual is intensely interested in coaching and enjoys working with
young people. Since he also had done some coaching in the South,
we were naturally interested to know if there appeared to be any
significant differences in coaching techniques between the two
areas of the country. The major difference Eual thought in
basketball is that they play more of a running game in the South
with of course greater emphasis on man-to-man competition,
whereas in the North more emphasis seems to be placed on zone
play. In addition to the teacher organizations to which he
belongs Eual is a member of Kappa Delta Phi, his college academic
society. He and Mrs. McCauley also are members of Waveland
Methodist Church. (picture)
