George Miles was born in Jasmine County, Kentucky Nov 11, 1807, and moved to
Brown Township, Montgomery County, Indiana in the year 1830. He has lived on the
40 acres of land he now owns for 48 years. He is the father of 13
children, 6 boys & 7 girls. 8 of them are still living, 3 girls/five
boys. Friday, the 11th day of November, being the 74th anniversary of his birth,
his children having previously arranged to give him a surprise on his
birthday, hitched to their wagons & drove to the old time residence
of their father. The old man had been decoyed away from home, and the
children set a long table, which was laden with the good things of the
land.
At 12 o'clock, the old man, in company with his friend and
neighbor, Carl Muliken and Elias Smith, who had fallen in with them,
drew near his residence, when he discovered from the wagons and buggies,
that he had company. He entered his house and found in waiting such a
sumptuous repast, as he had not beheld for many a year. He was shown a
seat at the end of the table, which was surrounded by his children and grandchildren,
together with his friends & neighbors. After dinner, Carl Muliken
gave the old gentleman a chair, and addressed him in the following
brief, but appropriate manner, "Uncle George, sometimes old people come
to think that their children have forgotten them. I don't know that this
has been your thought, but in view of this fact, your children and
grandchilddren have prepared you this dinner, such as I have not seen in
