James
Meharry was also a settler in the township - one of the early ones to
claim government land. Hugh Meharry, one of the most successful men in
this county, entered his land in 1827, the same being the SE quarter of
Sec 3, Rg 6W. In 1828 he brought his young wife to his slab and canvas
house in which they lived one year. He owned his land, had $20 in money,
one horse and one ox, yet through his untiring energy, with that of his
good companion, he finally possessed 20,000 acres of valuable land. He
had to go to Terre Haute to mill and during his absence of 5 days his
wife had to remain alone in the tent-house and hear the howling wolves
beside her rude home. In 1881, the original claim of Mr. Meharry was
owned and occupied by his son, Alexander.
