Source: 3 - 12 - 1914 Crawfordsville Journal The passing of a man who was born in Germany and who served in the German army in the Prusso - Austrian war before coming to the US and to this city, was marked when Melchoir Mayer 72 years old, died at his home, N. Grant Ave, at 4:30 Saturday afternoon. Illness with which he has suffered since last July caused Mr. Mayer's death but he had not enjoyed good health since suffering a slight paralytic stroke 5 years ago. Coming to this country in 1868 Mr. Mauer soon located in Crawfordsville, where he has resided for more than 40 years. He aided in the construction of the courthouse here. Previous to his coming here he worked as a brick moulder in NJ and was employed for a time in St. Louis when the Eads bridge was built. He was marr. In this city to Anna Lorenz in 1883. 3 sons, Karl, William and John survive. Mr. Meyer was the 6th of a family of 12, four brothers and six sisters, preceding him in death while one sister, Marie Henning is living at Wurtenberg, Germany. The deceased was known to a large number of friends here and throughout the County and he was held in the highest respect and regard by all who knew him. A genial, frank, honest air which characterized Mr. Mayer, won for him the sincere friendship of all who knew him and the sympathy of this host of friends has gone out to him during his illness which has kept him confined to his home since last July. Funeral Services will be held from the home at 3 Tues afternoon with burial in Oak Hill.
