Evi MARTIN, who was born in 1796 and who is still living in 1880, came from Miami County, Ohio to Montgomery County, Indiana, landing at his father's house in Union Twp, Nov 26, 1827. He soon entered a farm, being the S 1/2 of SW 1/4 Sec 7 and the N 1/2 of NW 1/4 Sec. 18; Township 18, Rg 3 E of Walnut Township. About the middle of December that year, Mr. Martin erected the fifth log house, or building in the township. one post, two poles, two auger holes and a few clapboards, constituted their first bedstead in their new home, into which they moved Feb 4, 1828. Here they toiled 10 years without buying a nail, and then paid 12 1/2 cents a pound, $8 a barrel for salt and got 60 cents a bushel for wheat and couldn't get anything for butter and eggs. - typed by kbz

"Yankeetown News" - - The citizens of this place anticipate a quiet time since the literary has closed and they will not be compelled to listen to Evi Martin rehearsing for debate at all hours of the day and night.
The literary society at this place closed on last Saturday night, amid the sound of a trumpet and the clash of arms. The question for discussion was, Resolved: that the fear of punishment prompts man to greater energy, than the hopes of reward Evi Martin immortalized himself by delivering his speech, which he has been preparing for the past six months. - typed by kbz
