Oliver P. Mahan was born about 1837 (Sept 29, 1836) in Indiana and was married in Montgoery County, January 3, 1861 to Mary M. Hoover, daughter of Alexander Hoover, listed as a fan maker in the Franklin Township 1850 census.  It was said that Oliver was an "enthusiasting young doctor, locating in Darlington, some in the 1850s."  At the outbreak of the Civil War, "his patriotism inspired him to enlist in defense of his country."  He was in the 52nd Regiment, Indiana Infantry, Company B as a 1st Lt.  He was promoted to Captain on August 16, 1862.  Not long afterward, he set-up a partnership with George Colson, also a Civil War soldier.  This was located in Thorntown.  After this, it is thought that he studied law and located at Lebanon.  He is found there in the 1880 census with Mary and their four children: Oliver, Fannie, Pet (a daughter) and Homer.

Note: He is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon, Boone County, Indiana Plot 6 #6 - he passed away June 2, 1914
