"In the fall of 1840 the first regular commencement was held and the President inaugurated. A charge was delivered by Governor Wallace and an inaugural address by the President, both of which were published. The new building was completed and the above exercises were the first consecration of its halls to the purposes for which they were designed. The first graduates were John Wheeler, of Bellefontaine. Ohio; Thomas A. Goodwin, of Brookville, Indiana, and JAMES MADDOX, of Crawfordsville, Indiana."

Note 1: Assume this is in reference to the first graduation of Asbury (DePauw) College although I'd have though it would have been earlier.
Note 2: Thanks
to my genealogy buddy, Jeff S for this one :)
