T.
J. Layne a prominent and respected citizen of Chillicothe where he is
passing the sunset of life retired from active labor was born in
Goochland Co, Va Feb 27, 1812. The parents of our subject were Elisha
and Elizabeth LAYNE LAYNE, natives of the Old Dominion. the father died
Nov 27, 1860. He was a member of the Baptist Church, took great
interest in promoting the cause of the Master and also in all public
enterprises that were calculated for the good of the community in which
he resided. The mother of our sujbect died Nov 31, 1860. She was also a
member of the Baptist Church and bore her husband 10 children, four
daughter and six sons; Matilda, Mrs. Doyle is deceased; Eliza A. is the
widow of John GALEY, and is living with her children; TJ our subject
was next in order of birth; Elisha B. died in 1849 being at the time of
his demise a candidate for Legislature of his state; Elizabeth, now
deceased was the wife of W. A. Long; Jacob W. was killed in 1880 by the
running away of a team; Samuel M. is a farmer in Montgomery Co IN;
Preston M. prosperous physician of Crawfordsville, Ind; Letitia died in
1846. In 1815 the paternal family of our subject moved from Virginia
to Ky; where the father at once entered upon the task of clearning and
improving a farm. He lived in that state until 1830 when he moved to
Montgomery Co IN and there purchased 160 acres of land on which the old
folks lived until their death.
In 1835 the subject of this notice was
united in in marriage with Miss Sallie daughter of Daniel and Nancy
EDGMAN EASLEY. She was born in 1818 and their union has been blest by
the birth of 3 children, James T. a farmer in Adams Twp, this county;
Franklin M. residing near Swan Lake, DAK; and Walter H., sheriff of
Cherokee Co, KS. On the 4th of March 1842 Mrs. Layne, mother of the
above children departed life in Montgomery Co IN; where she is buried.
In 1847 our subject formed a second matrimonial alliance, with Miss Sarah G., daughter of Baxter and Polly Edgman. Of this latter union, 4
children have been born two sons and two daughters: Joseph S. is a
farmer in Cass Twp; H.D. and Nancy A., the wife of William GALEY,
reside in Chillcothe this county and Sarah E. died in infancy. Mr.
Layne came to Wapello Co in 1843 and soon thereafter entered 320 acres
of Government land in what is now Polk Twp. On this he located and at
once began its improvement; and lived there until 1875 meeting with
success in his labors. During the latter year he sold his farm it being
at the time one of the most improved in Polk Twp and moved to Macon
Co, MO. There he purchased 120 acres of land on which he made his home
about 5 years and until the death of Mrs. Layne in 1879 when he sold
out and returning to Chillcothe has since made that his home residing
with his daughter, Mrs. Galey. He is well preserved in mind and body
and has been no inactive factor in the upbuilding and growth of
Wapello Co, having held numerous offices of trust and taken an active
part in politics always upon the side of the Democratic party.
