Krug - John Valentine - Montgomery InGenWeb Project

(in part) On Sept 2, 1753 in Lancaster PA, John Valentine KRUG became a naturalized citizen of the United States. He was a native of Lengefeld, Saxony now a part of East Germany. He bought with him his ability to operate a brewery and tannery in Lancaster, PA. His grandson, William Augustus left PA and settled in Crawfordsville, IN in 1839. William was a saddler in Crawfordsville and lived to be 103. His son William Jones, a very colorful sheriff of Montgomery County married Kezia McCain. The eldest of their 10 children, William Augustus Krug moved to Fountain County sometime after 1860. William Augustus Krug was the father of six children, all born in Fountain County. Of the six, 3 remained in Fountain County. Arthur Krug lived in Covington; Palmer Krug, Newtown and John Krug, Hillsboro. John Krug was a farmer until 1918 when he and his wife, Stella Berry moved into Hillsboro and started a general merchandise store. The building in which the store was located still stands on the corner of Main and Water Street. John Krug managed the store until ill health forced him to retire two years before his death in 1940. John was a lover of children and a devoted father.

John and Stella raised six children in the family house on Main Street behind the general store. Their six children were: William Russell, a veteran of WWI married Jewell Cory and moved to Akron, Ohio. Goergia Fay married Casper Cooper a bookeeper and moved to Montgomery County. Paul Morris, died at birth. Herbert Lee married Gladys Ellis and remainedin Hillsboro. Mable May married Wallace Tague and remained in Hillsboro then moved to Crawfordsville. Frances Marie married Byrle Parks and moved to Waveland, ater Crawfordsville. After John's death, Herbert became administrator of the estate which consisted mostly of real estate. Herbert and his wife Gladys reared one son in the house on Main Street, Billy, like his father was a good athlete and played on the Hillsboro Basketball team. He was killed during WWII in 1944. Gladys became ill that same yaear and died the next year 1945. The first combined memorial and funeral service for mother and son ever to be held in Hillsboro, was conducted the Saturdaya fter her death at the Hillsboro Christian Church. Herber married Geneva Banta and brought her to the same house on Main Street in Hillsboro. Here their family include one daughter, Marie and one son, Don.
