Kennedy - Benjamin S.
Benjamin S. Kennedy, a son of Elijah and Emily (Misner) Kennedy, was born Feb. 1859 in Montgomery Co., IN. He went to Alaska where he worked as a miner. Eventually he moved to Fairbanks where he was in business with Martin Claney [1910 Federal territorial census for Fairbanks, District 23, Garden Island Village, stamped page 280, dwelling 25.]. The 1900 Alaskan census asks for a previous home address and previous occupation to which he responds: Crawfordsville, IN and Farmer; he says he is now a miner, that he came to Alaska in June of 1891, is now 40, can read and write, and owns his house[1900 Federal census for the Alaskan Territory, Northern Supervisors District, Eagle, District 13, page 20A (Stamped Page 167)]. He eventually returned to Indiana where he died. A notice of his death appeared in the Fairbanks [Alaska] Daily-News Miner of Thursday 11 April 1940 [Page 6, Column 7.].
Resident of Pioneer Days Is at Rest
B.S. Kennedy, early day resident of Fairbanks, passed away at Crawfordsville, Indiana, March 26. New of his passing comes in a letter to the News-Miner from Miss Albina Miler, well known former Fairbanks girl, now in the offices of the Alaska Railroad in Chicago.
Mr. Kennedy was prominent in business here in the exciting pioneer days of the camp. He conducted a grocery store for years in Garden Island until 12 years ago when he returned to his old home in Crawfordsville and remained there with relatives until his death.
In her letter, Miss Miller concludes: 'We have enjoyed having many Alaskans call on us at our offices, 321,22,23 North Michigan avenue, and are always glad to see our friends from the North.'
I don't know if there was a local write-up for his death ca 26 March 1940.
