HEBNRY and WILLIAM HENRY KEENEY
Note: Henry Keeney (b. about 1812) and Polly (Hughes) Keeney, his wife, built the first dwelling in Madison Township, Montgomery County, according to the 1881 HW Beckwith History (p 433). Henry was a native of Kentucky and at the age of 18, came to Crawfordsville where he read medicine. On October 7, 1832, he married Polly and they became the parents of at least six children: John, James, Louisa, Ruhamma, Urial and William H (b. about 1852, who also became a doctor in the Linden area). W.H. is listed in the 1870 Madison Twp. census as "reading medicine" at age 18). In 1846, Dr. Keeney set up practice in Crawfordsville. Two years later, he located in Linden and was the oldest practicing physician at the time of the Beckwith History.

One of my personal favorites of all the doctors herein is Henry Keeney, who built the first house in Linden, while his brother, William built the first blacksmith shop. Henry was born in Pulaski County, Kentucky Oct 8, 1811 and moved to Montgomery County, Indiana in 1829. His parents were James and Carol (Harbott) Keeney. Three years after arriving in our area, Henry married Mary (whom he called Polly) Hughes Oct 8, 1832. She was the daughter of John and Ruhanna Hughes. Henry's first career was as a carpenter and joiner. In fact, he assisted in the building of Montgomery County's first courthouse. Seven children were born to Henry and Polly: John; Lucetta; Louisianna; Ruhanna; Uriel, James and W.H. After the first five of these children, Henry decided his desire in life was to become a physician. He read medicine with Herdon & Sloan for six years, then started his practice in 1849 where his background as a carpenter came in handy when he built his Linden home. W.H. Keeney, the youngest child of Henry and Polly was born there June 8, 1851. Encouraged by his parents. W.H (William Henry more than likely) graduated from the Medical College in Indianapolis with honors and joined his father in practice. W.H. was quite active in the Linden community (IOOF; Masons and churches). His father was still practicing in 1893 but at the point of publican it is not known when he died. It is known that on March 13, 1890, Henry remarred, at almost age 70, to Amalia Stoddard Nicholson, who was 41 and marrying for the first time.
