Farmer and his Mother, Nancy living in Putnam Co. Father and half-brothers Joseph & John are living in TX. Sister, Rebecca, is married to James Wilson and they have a son, William.

Living with Uncle Thomas and family and working on the farm. Mother, Nancy and Sister, Rebecca & family have moved to IL.
1861-IL McDonough Co, Bushnell Twp.
In Sep 1861, Farmer enlisted for 3 months duty and is assigned to the 16th Reg't of the IL Volunteers.
1864-IL Cook Co, Chicago
On 15th of Feb, 1864, Farmer again enlisted in the Union Army for 3 yr. service. His enrollment records listed him as: Age 25, Single, Occupation, Artist with Brown eyes, dark hair, dark complexion, Height 6 Ft 1 inch. He is now assigned to: Co G (the Honor Guard) 11th Reg't, IL Cavalry. His commanders include both Gen. James McPherson and Gen. Wm. T. Sherman. His unit was involved in the Atlanta Campaign and Sherman's March to the Sea.
1865-IN Clay Co
17 July 1865-Farmer was mustered out and settled in Clay Co.
1867-IN Clay Co
On 20 Jan 1867, Farmer married Caroline P. Harvey, widow of James A. Doyel.
James A. Doyel, was a cousin of Farmer J. James. He was the son of Thomas S. Doyel with whom Farmer lived with back in 1860. Carrie, as she was known, was a schoolteacher. She & James had one child who died as an infant.
1870-1900 IN Clay Co
Farmer & Carrie lived in Posey Township and also Brazil. Farmer worked in a Grist Mill, was a Coal miner and in 1900 was a Justice of the Peace.
On 05 Jan 1909, Farmer died. It is presumed that he is buried along side his wife, Carrie in Cottage Hill Cemetery, Clay Co. Farmer and Carrie never had any children.
The following are some of the observations made by William Travis who wrote Farmer's biography for The History of Clay Co, IN, Pages 432-434:
On his military service: Mr. James was on many a hotly contested battlefield and never was his loyalty or his courage called into question.
On his civil service: Farmer is listed to be one of the first councilmen of Staunton after it was incorporated. He was prominent in the affairs of the city (Brazil) and has an official record over which there falls no shadow of wrong or suspicion of evil, having served for about 25 years as a justice of the peace. His decisions were strictly fair and impartial and winning him "golden opinions from all sorts of people."
Fraternal Organizations: A member of Brazil Lodge #264, A.F. & A.M. and an exemplary Mason. Served as master of the Staunton Lodge for eight and also a member of Brazil Chapter, No 59, R.A.M.; Brazil Council, No. 40 R. & S.M.; General Canby Post, No 2, G.A.R.; Wm Black Chapter, No 80, O.E.S. of which his wife was one of the organizers and most active member.
Political Allegiance: Republican Party, "the party of reform, progress and improvement."
Citizenship: Mr. James has been as loyal and as patriotic as when he followed the stars and stripes upon the battlefields of the south.
