Born in Pennsylvania about 1800, Joseph Griest is listed in Union Township, 1850 census with his wife, Ruth and six children. It is known that Griest was in Montgomery County living six miles northeast of Crawfordsville as early as 1835 when his ad appeared in the local newspaper, singing, "Botanic Medical Supplies in which practitioners could be supplied on reasonable terms.
A medical library of sorts (Dr. Robinson's Lectures, bound copies of the Thommsonian Recorder, Dr. Thomson's New Guide to Health) was also kept by Griest for the doctor's use, as well as the publics."
His father was possibly Joseph Griest, found in Montgomery County's first census as Joseph W. served as executor for his property in January of 1835.
Joseph also gave surety money for "Isaac Griest, an idiot of the age of 32 years or thereabouts an heir of Joseph Griest, deceased." This was on August 8, 1836 in the 1st Guardian Docket. William Burbridge, Robert Miller and John Griest would be appointed as Isaac's Guardian.
Note: It was just found in the Quaker Records that Joseph W. brought his family to Montgomery County on Valentine's Day in 1835. On January 1, in 1835 he purchased property Township 19 N Range 3 W Section 18
Also in the Quaker records Joseph Griest son of Joseph and Mary was born on the 19th of August in Adams, Pennsylvania - sure this is him as well.
