Samuel F. Graybill and Mary C ARNOLD (picture) were married
Sept 20, 1860. She was born Jan 19, 1839 in Scott Twp, to Daniel
and Nancy Myers Arnold. Nancy was the daughter of John Myers, Sr.
and Catherine Hautz Myers who came from Va in 1833 to Ladoga.
Samuel F. Graybill born in Ohio, May 5, 1837 came with his parents Daniel
and Elizabeth Frankebarger Graybill in 1838 to Ladoga and bought
190 acres of land and raised livestock and farmed, therefore,
Samuel was no stranger to hard work as his parents developed and
cleared the land. As a pioneer child he assisted in clearing the
wilderness. An important step in his life was joining the regular
Baptist Church 1866. He & Mary conscientiously were devout
members. They lived on a farm close to Ladoga and raised 4 of
their children there: Laura b. 1869; Alice May b. 1872; Manson b.
1875 and Lucille (Lou) b. 1878. Samuel, with his red hair had
sturdy energy and his self denying efforts made it possible for
those members of his family to live comfortably. At some
distressful time he suffered the loss of a leg.
He was
distinguishable by his courtesy and obliging nature and worthy of
the trust reposed in him by his neighbors and friends. May C. was
warm hearted, kind and provided a pleasant home for her family.
When Laura married Jess Oliver and had Verna b. 1892 and Letha,
born 1894 there was happiness, but Laura died one winter from
pneumonia and her small baby passed away not long after. Alice
married George Himes and they were so happy with two sons, Lester
and Chester, born 1893. Alice died in 1900 soon after Laura's
death. Alice was buried at Harshbarger Cemetery in the same
coffin with her stillborn baby. Lou married Roy Gregg and their
children were: Harry; Dorothy and Lethe, they lived at Peluride,
Co address, fairly close to Montrose. Manson, married Effie
Otterman - they had Paul; Mabel and Donald. He lived close to his
parents' home with his family. Samuel F. and Mary C. never
received public honor in any commercial way, but they are highly
esteemed by their many descendants. Daniel Graybill died Feb 13,
1890 and Elizabeth Frankebarger Graybill died Feb 6, 1873. Samuel
F. Graybill died Nov 18, 1898 and is buried in Harshbarger
Cemetery. - typed by kbz
