JOSEPH GILBERT, farmer, Terre Haute, was born in Terre Haute, Vigo county, Indiana, in 1839, and is the son of Curtis Gilbert, who was one of the pioneers of Vigo county, and a personal sketch of whom will be found elsewhere in this history. Joseph Gilbert has been engaged in horticultural pursuits in which he has taken quite an interest. He has been secretary of the Agricultural Society since its organization, and has been secretary and president of the Horticultural Society and president of the State Horticultural Society. In 1874 he was elected to the legislature. In 1862 he married Miss Sarah E. Morgan, daughter of Dr. Morgan, of Crawfordsville, Indiana. Mr. Gilbert is a wide-awake and energetic man, and does credit to the good name of his father long ago established. He is a kind husband and an indulgent father and a gentleman in every respect, and he has gained for himself a wide circle of friends both in the city and the surrounding country -- typed by kbz.
