On Tuesday Wm. Vance will begin his duties as regular fireman and his place as merchant policeman will be assumed by Arthur Dorsey of baseball fame.  Tuck Cox had arranged to succeed Mr. Vance, but Monday the county instructed the Maynor not to swear him in. Early this afternoon as Arthur Dorsey was coupling below the Vandalia station near the cattle guards he was caught between the cars and terribly crushed by the wood and iron.  Relief came as soon as possible and suffering frightful agony he was borne to his home on Main Street west of the station.  Medical aide was summoned at once and everything possible done to alleviate his pain.  His injuries are internal and he was spitting blood profusely.  It is impossible at present writing to determine the extent of his injuries, but they are very severe indeed.   ~~~Transcribed and Typed by kbz

Terre Haute Express – in speaking of the individual members this year’s successful ball club, the Terre Haute Express has the following to say of Arthur Dorsey of this city: “Dorsey has made a good record as a pitcher, batter and center fielder.  When pitching regularly no one made a home run off of him although he was hit oftender than either Eiteljog of Dougan.  As a batter he made six home runs during the season in spite of the fact that he played for three weeks with a broken finger.  As a field he did well and he has attained local celebrity for his success at making long slides.  He will return to his home in Crawfordsville today and will resume his duties as brakeman for the TH&L division of the Vandalia next Monday.  He will lay over there three days of each week.”   ~~~Transcribed and Typed by kbz

“Morton News” – Pap, them thar blasted mules is eaten that thar calf out yander “-  was the way Bas’ Thomas informed “Uncle” Hiram that his two big mules were running one of his fine spring calves last Monday.  Uncle Hi made a quick run to the clover-field fence, grabbed a rail and commenced to loosen mule ribs but those mules didn’t mind that a bit and only bit and kicked the hurler.  Mr. Gill seeing that Uncle Hiram was being worsted sent him reinforcements from the mill, the detachment of volunteer mule fighters was made up as follows: Arthur Dorsey, John Smyth, Bas Thomas, Jack Rosen, O.F. Cooper and Lou Cox, their weapons consisted of rails, clubs, cant (?) hooks, crowbars and snow bells they made a grand charge upon the enemy and after a desperate battle came off victorious after callin in the assistance of a couple of dogs.

Michigan City., July 1 – Arthur Dorsey, formerly captain of the Michigan City baseball team was horribly mangled by a freight train at Murdock, Ill according to a telegram just received.   ~~~Transcribed and Typed by kbz

Yesterday morning the fire department was called to the grocery store of Frank Hays on east Franklin street. The store was discovered to be ablaze by a passer and the alarm was turned in. Arrived on the scene the department found a rather ugly fire to fight. It had originated in the sawdust cuspidors about the stove and running up the side of the wall got into the rafters in the ceiling. The fire was having a gay old time in the garret when the fight against it was begun. There was any amount of water thrown and the stock was ruined, the fixtures also suffering badly. The residence of Arthur Dorsey, just west of the grocery, was slightly singed by the blaze before the fire was subdued and for awhile there was a decided commotion in the household. The redoubtable “Piggy”" came in evidence, however, and his old baseball experience served him well. He threw snowballs against the house faster and swifter than he ever threw the festive horsehide in championship days. The loss on the building and stock was considerable. The stock worth about S300, was insured for §400 by John M. Schultz in the German of Freeport. The building belonged to Pat McManus, being his old stand. It was insured for S500 by J. S. Kelley in the Dayton. This will probably cover the loss, although Mr. McManus is inclined to think it will not.   ~~~Transcribed and Typed by kbz
