Nelson Durham: A native Ohioan, was born in Fayette county, April 13, 1833; his parents, both deceased, were Dennis and Rachel (Lovelace) Durham; he has been twice married, his first wife being Lydia J. Waller who was born Feb. 13, 1839, and died April 8, 1879. They were married October, 1866, in Clinton county, Ind., and five children were born to them: Flora E., William E., Ida, Etta and Lydia dec. He married, secondly, Oct. 17, 1885, Susan Nelson. When the late war broke out our subject had been engaged in farming; he was enrolled from Clarks Hill, Ind., July 1, 1861, as a private in Co. G, 26th Ind. V. I., which was attached to 3d Brig., 2d Div., 13th A. C. Dec. 7, 1862, he was slightly wounded in thigh at the battle of Prairie Grove. Previous to this, he was confined in hospital at Tifton, Mo., one month; he was then furloughed for thirty days and returned to command at end of time. Jan. 31, 1864, he was honorably discharged at Brownsville, Texas, and re-enlisted February, 1864, at same place as a veteran in old command; he was granted the 30 day furlough given to veterans; he fought at Prairie Grove, Siege of Vicksburg, Mobile and several skirmishes. Aug. 7, 1864, he was detailed on special duty in hospital department of T. W. Forer for two years, or till honorably discharged Jan. 15, 1866, at Vicksburg, Miss. He had two brothers in the volunteer service, Austin in Co. G, 26th Ind. V. I., as cook, died in New Orleans hospital Oct. 16, 1863, and John; his wife's brother, James served in an Ill. Regt., and was wounded in the thigh where the ball is still lodged. Comrade Durham belongs to John Kise Post, 437, he has a pension, and his P. O. address is Darlington, Ind., near which place he is engaged in farming. - thanks to my ol pal and fab helper, Jeff S for this one :)
