Nicholas J. Dorsey was born on September 15, 1825 near Frederick, Maryland and came to Montgomery County in August of 1866 when he "respectfully tendered his services for the citizens of Crawfordsville in his office on Main Street." His wife, Hannah Amanda Talbott was born May 30, 1824 at Charleston, Indiana.

During the Civil War, Governor Oliver P. Morton placed Nicholas Dorsey in charge of the IndianaHospital Corps. It is known that the family was here at least through the 1870 census. Dr. Dorsey was a graduate of William's College in Baltimore and the son of Lloyd and Rebecca Law Torrence Dorsey.
For sevral year prior to coming to Indiana, Dr. Dorsey practiced medicine with his father. He died in Chicago on March 5, 1905 and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis.
