Daugherty - Fred

FRED N. DAUGHERTY (Dr.)

Dr. Daugherty was a jolly soul.  Born and raised in Princeton, (Gibson County) Indiana (22 Nov 1896) he was the son of William E. Daughtery and Minnie Selby and was the oldest of three sons.  His father was a tinner and the son of an Irish immigrant.  He did well in life with a tough work ethic,  and became the township trustee later on in life.

Fred N. Daugherty married his beloved Bessie (Elizabeth Clark born in Crawfordsville daughter of John Clark and Minnie Murphy, also of Irish descent) in Crawfordsville at St. Bernard's rectory on June 15, 1926.  Do not think they had children of their own, but they raised several and helped others go to school, maybe even adopting a couple of these "children."

Fred spent 3 months in the Army during the very end of WWI.  He remained in the service (USMC)  for many years (see picture above) where he became a Colonel.  He died in his long time home, 415 W. Main Street of Carcinoma, 18 August 1982, treated by his partner, and our beloved doctor, Richard R. Eggers.  At the time of his death he was Health officer for Montgomery County.  Dr. Eggers signed his Death Record as "AHO - Aciting Health Officer."

Overall, he spent 50 plus years in private practice in Crawfordsville, mainly at his 106 1/2 S. Green Street address, later the 100 block of West Pike Street.   Almost all of his years he had very odd hours -- 11:30 a.m. to noon then reopen from 2-4 and again 7-8.  Open Saturday morning and of course closed on Sundays.

A blue-eyed, brown-haired Irishman, he was again a jolly soul! -- kbz
