(Dr) Courtney a reside nt of Waveland for over 60 years died Tuesday Aug 3, at 7:00 p.m. at the R ichmond home where he had been living for the past 4 or 5 years. This info rmation was obtained from a message to Arthur Jarvis and the cause of h is death is not known. The funeral will be held Thursday Aug 5 at 1:30 p. m. Evansville, Ind and burial will take place there.  Mr. Courtney is an u ncle of Willard and Arthur Jarvis.

Thursday April 27 -- .75 cts.  Cloudy and damp. Doc Courtney, a man with one arm says he has plowed about 40 gardens this season. He plowed Buddy Kelso's today and done a good job, better than some would do with use of two good arms.

Source: Waveland Independent, Friday, Dec 16, 1904 -- The shredder accident, a daily feature somewhere, has at last struck Waveland, heretofore exempt A. L. Courtney is the victim and it costs him his left arm.  He was shredding on J.D. Fisher's farm, Wapello, Wednesday morning, when the accident oc curred.  The fodder was very dry and crooked making it hard to feed.  He w as standing on the left-side forcing the stalks, when his hand caught in t he feed rolls, drawing it and the forearm into the machine. Nelson Mile s, who was runnign the engine, stopped and reversed almost instantly, b ut the hand was already gone and gones of the fore-arm splintered. Courtn ey was drive to Waveland, a distance of 7 miles, before surgical aid cou ld be obtained. He made no complaint on the way home except that his ha nd - which was gone - was so cold. The arm was amputated at the elbow. He is now suffering a great deal of pain.  It is a great misfortune and Mr. Courtney and his family have the hearty sympathy of the community.

A.L. COURTNEY has sold his filling station on West 47 and left on Tuesday for Dodge City, KS, where a half-sister Mrs. Palmer WARD and a brother live. Doc lived there himself 50 years ago so he will feel at home.

NOTE 1:  He was called "Doc" but think that was just a nickname not ever an occupation  - kbz

NOTE 2 -- He and Martha Virginia Jarvis, his wife of 54 years before she passed away (29 Dec 1938 born 20 April 1861) are buried in Park Lawn Cemetery, Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana
