Charles J. Bowles, the candidate for Congress in the Ninth District, is a Babtist (sic) minister and farmer, 56 years of age, and a resident of Montgomery County. He was born in Huron County, Ohio on a farm. When 12 he went on the lakes as a sailor, remained 11 years, during which time he learned the ship carpenter's trade. At the age of 23, he removed to Vermillion (sic) County, Illinois and married. In 1842 he commenced preaching and after two years, when he had a family of two children he returned to Ohio, an attended school for four years and more, finished an academic course of study. He removed to Fountain County, Indiana in 1851 where he has resided ever since, preaching and farming until a few weeks since, when he removed to Waynetown, in Montgomery County. Mr. Bowles was formerly a Democrat, but favored the prosecution of the war. He has never sought nor held office and only accepts the nomination tendered by the people in the hope that he may be able to render his countrymen good service, and assist in redeeming the poor and laboring classes from the thralldom of the money power, and purge the public service of corruption. Mr. Bowles is a man of imposing appearance, of fine abilities and a natural orator. He will devote his energies and talents to the campaign and the people will have an opportunity to make his acquaintance before the campaign closes. - transcribed by kbz
