Benefiel - George W.

GEORGE W. BENEFIEL

Source: Zach, Karen Bazzani.  Montgomery Medicine Men... Crawfordsville: Montgomery County Historical Society, 2002.

Although Dr. George W. Benefiel was not a physician, per se, he was a well-loved and intellectual veterinarian.  I include him in the Montgomery Medicine Men because of his deep Montgomery County ties an and his interesting death.  He was kicked by a horse two years prior to the time he died and although recovered, friends felt he failed after the accident,  About 3 o'clock on January 4, 1905, he left his office at Bob Davis' livery barn and started for home with a couple of boxes under his arms.  Just before he turned into the gate at the corner of Walnut and Jefferson Streets, he was observed by his neighbor, Mrs. Charles Goltra.  He had just dropped one of his packages and bending down to pick it up, he finally gave up and sat down on the box.  Then, he fell over.  She quickly notified neighbors and friends of Dr. Benefiel and they carried him to his house and called a physician.  Dr. Hutchins arrived shortly, but Dr. Benefiel lapsed into a sleep about midnight and never returned.  Born in Montgomery County, Dr. Benefiel was almost 59 when he passed away.

Note: Burial in Oak Hill Grant Avenue Cemetery (which is really the Masonic Cemetery and many indexes say this but a few years ago someone got the dumb idea to change the nanes of the cemeteries in our county - I mean okay do it this way:  Masonic Cemetery: Oak Hill Grant Avenue or whatever but to completely leave out he is buried in the Masonic Cemetery - okay, it's my band wagon -- sorry.  Dates: Feb 9, 1845 - Jan 4, 1905.  He is buried near his parents, George Washington Sr and Margery VbanCleave plus siblings, Martha Jane; William Henry and James Harvey.  He was a well-loved man.
