Bell - John W. - Montgomery InGenWeb Project

It is a pleasure to look over the broad acres of John W. BELL in Union Township, for they are not only well tilled, but well kept and under modern improvements, stamping him as one of the enterprising and progressive farmers of the younger generation in Montgomery County. Like many another young man he started in life for himself in the city, but was wise enough to leave the grind there, and get as close to nature as possible where there is independence, health and freedom in every respect where one will live longer, be happier and do more good. He has been most fortunate in getting so well established while yet young, and we predict for him a future of much reward. Mr. Bell was born in this county Jan 8, 1870. He is a son of William and Mary FISHERO Bell. The father was born in Ohio and his death occurred April 18, 1884. The mother was born in Montgomery County and she preceded her husband to the grave in 1881. William was a child when he left his native state and came to Indiana and here he spent the rest of his life. When a young man he learned the plaster's trade which he continued to following, becoming quite proficient. When the Civil War came on he volunteered for service in an Indiana regiment in which he served very faithfully until honorably discharged. Five children were born to William Bell and wife, all deceased but the subject of this sketch. John W. Bell received a common school education. On December 31, 1895, he married Minnie LITER who was born and reared on a farm in this county and she received her education in the high school. She still lives on the old home place where her birth occurred and where she has spent practically all of her life. She is a daughter of Martin J. and Lizzy NORMAN Liter. Her father was born in this county on Jan 19, 1836 and here he spent his life, successfully engaged in general farming and stock raising in Union Twp. He was a highly respected man, industrious and possessed sound judgment. His death occurred May 17, 1906. The mother of Mrs. Bell was born in Henry County, Kentucky Nov 5, 1835 and her death occurred April 12, 1889. The union of the subject and wife has been without issue. Mr. Bell spent his earlier years in Crawfordsville where he worked at various occupations, including clerking and for some time was connected with the fire department of the city. Upon his marriage he moved to the farm where he now lives, which place he had managed successfully and kept well improved in every way. This fine and productive farm consists of 223 acres, about 100 of which is under a high state of cultivation well tiled and otherwise well improved. Mr. bell is carrying on general farming and stock raising. Politically, Mr. Bell is a Republican; belongs to the Patriotic Order Sons of America at Crawfordsville; is a member of the Tribe of Ben Hur and religiously holds membership in the Methodist Episcopal Church. - typed by kbz
