Beard, John (1795-1874) of Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Ind. Nephew of Patrick Beard; cousin of Isaac N. Beard.
Born in North Carolina, January 4, 1795.
Member of Indiana state house of representatives, 1827-31; member of Indiana state senate, 1831-41, 1846-49; delegate to Republican National Convention from Indiana, 1860.
Quaker.
Died in Montgomery County, Ind., September 29, 1874.
Burial location Crawfordsville Masonic Cemetery (Union).

Note: Someone in Montgomery County decided to rename the cemeteries - DUMB - anyway, the cemetery he is buried in is NOW CALLED Oak Hill Grant Avenue

John Beard, Senator born January 04, 1795 in Guilford County, North Carolina and died September 29, 1874 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana; married Maria Burroughs born July 16, 1797 in Virginia and died January 08, 1882 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana - both are buried in the Masonic Cemetery, Montgomery County, Indiana - they married March 04, 1816 in Wayne County, Indiana. They had 7 children:

1. Elizabeth D. Beard was born in 1817 in Indiana; she married first Phillip E. Engle. Elizabeth and Phillip had 3 children: a. Elizabeth Ellen Engle b. Emma A. Engle c. Capt. John B. Engle, a soldier born about 1845 in Indiana. It is thought that he married Ida Ellis on October 13, 1881 - and that he died December 26, 1883 in Union, Montgomery County, Indiana. Elizabeth married second George P. Tiffany who was born October 1808 in Onandaga County, New York and died in 1866 in Indiana - married July 03, 1855 in Montgomery County, Indiana. Mr. Tiffany dealt quite largely in cattle. In 1880 Elizabeth had living with her son John B. Engle and 3 of the Graham children (Letty, Nathan and Lucy) as wards. She was their aunt.

2. Thomas J. Beard was born February 1822 in Indiana; he married Susan 'Sue' Tiffany who was born in 1832 in Ohio. They had 2 children: a. George T. Beard born in 1857 in Indiana. b. Mary Beard born in 1861 in Indiana.

3. Mary Beard was born between 1830 - 1832 in Indiana and died January 08, 1876 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana; she married Nathan L. Graham who was born between 1827 - 1830 in Kentucky and died before 1880 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana - they were married November 11, 1852 in Montgomery County, Indiana. Nathan was a pioneer merchant of Crawfordsville. When Nathan and Mary died they left children who were wards of Elizabeth (nee Beard, Widow Engle) Tiffany, age 63 and her son John B. Engle (Capt.?), age 35, (he died January, 5 1884) - in the 1880 Census. (These were relatives of Mary's - her sister Elizabeth Beard Tiffany).Nathan and Mary had 8 children: 1) James Graham was born about 1853 and died September 27, 1855 at age 2 years - both in Union, Montgomery County, Indiana; buried in Crawfordsville Odd Fellows Cemetery (Union), Montgomery County, Indiana. 2) Elizabeth Graham was born about 1855 in Union, Montgomery County, Indiana and died November 29, 1918 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana; she married John Courtney who died December 08, 1930 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana - they had 2 children: a. Robert Courtney b. Mary Courtney married John Merrill. 3) Thomas Lewis Graham born about 1858 in Union, Montgomery County, Indiana; he probably died before 1870. 4) John 'Johnie' B. Graham born about 1859 and died about 1861 at age 18 months - both in Union, Montgomery County, Indiana; buried in Crawfordsville Odd Fellows Cemetery (Union), Montgomery County, Indiana. 5) Mary B. Graham was born about 1861 in Union, Montgomery County, Indiana and died about 1885 in Angus, Boone County, Iowa in childbirth; she first married to Dr. Frank West (see below - Letty) - married on September 12, 1881 in Montgomery County, Indiana. they had 2 children. 6) Letitia 'Letty Lee' Lincoln Graham was born April 06, 1865 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana and died November 28, 1948 in Seattle, King County, Washington ; she second married Dr. Rev. Benjamin Franklin 'Frank' West who was born April 22, 1858 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana and died July 02, 1933 in Seattle, King County, Washington - married May 12, 1886 in Angus, Greene County, Iowa. He was a medical missionary to the orient. They had 7 children. 7) Nathan 'Lew' Graham was born about 1867 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana and died September 20, 1935 in Middleton, Orange County, New York. In 1881 at age 14 he joined a circus band with the Barnum & Bailey shows. Lew was a familiar figure in the circus world for many years and was identified prominently with the Barnum & Bailey, Wallace & Hagenback, and Ringling Brothers shows. Lew may have been married. 8) Lucy 'Lula' M. Graham was born about 1870 and died about 1874 at age 4 years both in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana; buried in Crawfordsville Odd Fellows Cemetery (Union), Montgomery County, Indiana.

4. Wilhelminia 'Whillie' B. Beard was born March 01, 1835 in Indiana and died February 1901 in Indiana; she married Bennett W. Engle who was born January 19, 1820 near Harper's Ferry, Virginia and died January 29, 1896 in Indiana * married September 14, 1855 in Montgomery County, Indiana. They had 5 children: a. Ellis Engle probably died in infancy. b. John Beard Engle born 1859 in Indiana. c. Mary Engle born 1861 in Indiana. d. Emma Engle born 1865 in Indiana. e. Bennett B. Engle born 1874 in Indiana.

5. Letty Beard died before 1874; she married Mr. Evans. They had 5 children: a. Ira F. Evans b. Josephine Evans c. Levia Evans d. Julia Evans e. Thomas B. Evans 6. Hannah C. Beard married Mr. Allen. They had 3 children: a. Carrie Allen b. Katie Allen c. Joseph F. Allen 7. Martha Jane Beard married Mr. Terhune of Iowa.
