Charles Henry Ball was born in Montgomery County, Indiana the 29th of January in 1838. He joined sister Kate and Alice. The Balls should have been in the 1840 Montgomery County census but do not seem to be. His father remains Unknown Ball and his mother's first name is Mary.

There are no Guardian Dockets, Tombstones, Census Records, Wills or Probates indicating who his father was but his death certificate says John and mother, Marie (Mary).

He is found in the 1850 census with his mother, Mary age 37 (Household #829 Union Twp), born in Virginia, his sister, Kate, age 15 born in Virginia and his sister Alice, 13 born in Virginia. He is 12 born in Indiana and his brother, John born in Indiana. With the age of John and no more children, having been born it seems that his father had probably just passed away.

Charles Henry Ball married Martha L. Adams in Loudon County, Virginia on the 15th day of January in 1868 and their one and only child was a daughter named Mary Alice born late in that year. She was likely named for his mother and sister. It seems likely then that he would probably have been named for his father, either Charles or Henry. Martha passed away at age 30 on the 1st day of March in 1876 in Philadelphia, PA.

Charles was a Confederate in the Civil War, Co F VA 5th Cavalry, enlisting 23 April 1861. He mustered out 5 Feb 1863. Transferring into Co I, 11th VA Cavalry 5 Feb 1863, he remained in that service until the close of the war where he was mustered out 27 April 1865 at Fairfax Court House, Virginia. His 11th unit was known as the "Laurel Brigade." He was wounded in the left elbow at Smithsburg, Maryland the 5th of July 1863, the only man wounded and stayed in Chimborazo Hospital #2 for several weeks. Ball furnished his own horse during the war, appraised at $625, some fine horse. The rank of 1st Sgt. was his title at the end of the war.

He stood slightly over 5 and a half foot, was medium built and medium complexion with hazel eyes and brown hair. He died in Philadelphia (1711 Oxford Street) on the 25th of November 1920. His death record differs somewhat in the fact it says he was born in Virginia vs. Indiana.

He was 82 years 4 months and 4 days and did Newspaper work for his living. Senility and Acute gastro troubles caused his death. He was buried in Vienna, (Fairfax) Virginia on the 26th of November by Don Armstrong, Undertaker, certificate signed by Dr. Leroy Walker. He lies in Sec 1, Lot 16 with a small plain stone.

On his Marriage Record to Martha Adam(s), it states he was born in Montgomery County, Indiana in 1840 Father: John T. Ball and mother, Mary S. Ball. Bk 2 p 28 Loudon Co, VA. - typed & written by Karen Bazzani Zach - thought this fella' deserved more than just a picture which is all we originally had.
