Lewis C. Ambrose: A son of Mathias and Sarah (Perkins) Ambrose, both deceased, was born in Pickaway County, OH, Sept. 27, 1850. The maiden name of his wife, to whom he was married February 1866, in Wingate, Ind., was Anna McClure. She was born in Montgomery County, Ind., Sept. 3, 1843, and was a daughter of Alexander and Harriet (Duncan) McClure, the latter only is living. No children have blessed this union. Comrade Ambrose was a farmer and was 21 years old when he went into the army August 1861 at Chambersburg, Ind. He became a private in Co. H, Harris' Lt. Cav., 3rd Brig., 4th Div., 17th A. C. Jan 1, 1862, he was confined in Regtl. Hospital at Long Bridge on account of typhoid fever about four months. He was honorably discharged May 1862 at Washington, DC, being unfit for further field service. A year later he re-enlisted at Cairo, Ill., in Co. B, 32nd Ill. V.I. December 1864, he was stricken with lung fever at Savannah, Ga., was sent to Ft. Schuyler, New York, one wee k, thence to Quincy, Ill., where he remained until honorably discharged June 1865 at Quincy. He was an active participant in the battles of Chattanooga, Resaca, Buzzard Roost, Burnt Hickory, Kenesaw Mt., Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta, Sherman's March to the Sea, Savannah, Goldsboro, Charleston and several others. He had four brothers in action: Levi in 12th Ill. V.I., was wounded at Corinth and died on field of battle, Henry in 12th Ill., Wm. In Co. E, 40th Ill. V.I., was wounded at Kenesaw Mt., and John in an Ohio Regt. John, Alexander and Joseph Duncan, uncles of his wife, also served. His grandfather, Perkins and his wife's grandfather, Alexander Duncan served in the War of 1812. Comrade Ambrose and wife are members of the M.E. Church, he was Chap. of McPherson Post, No. 7, he is by trade a carpenter and his address is Crawfordsville, Ind. -- typed by kbz
