One of the native sons of Union Township, Montgomery County who has been wise enough to remain in his native community and follow the vocation of his ancestors instead of seeking new lines of activity in the city is Grant AGNEW, who is engaged in general farming and stock raising, and as an agriculturist has been very successful, as he was brought up a farmer's lad, learning all the details of the work and with advancing years and methods has been quick to adopt whatever new ideas he found best.
Mr. Agnew was born on Aug 3, 1862 in this township and county. He is a son of Alvin and Annie FULLEN Agnew both natives of this county and each representing old families. Here they grew to maturity, received such educational advantages as the early day schools afforded and here they were married and established their home, engaging in general farming. The father became a soldier for the Union, bravely offering his life, which, indeed, he sacrificed for the government, for his death occurred during the war in 1862. He was a Whig and later a Republican. His widow has survived him a half century and is now living in St. Joseph, Missouri. He was twice married and had two children by his first wife and one by his second: John who lives in Terre Haute, Indiana; Lizzie, deceased and Grant of this sketch.
Grant Agnew grew to manhood ont he farm and received a common school education. On October 3, 1883, he married Mary DAVIDSON, who was born in Union Twp, Montgomery Co Aug 2, 1864. She is a daughter of Samuel and Mary HIATT Davidson, both of whom are now deceased. Mrs. Agnew grew to womanhood in her native community and received a common school education. To Mr. and Mrs. Agnew one child has been born: Talmadge Agenw, born Oct 1886. He grew to manhood on the farm and received a good education in the common schools, later attending Wabash College two years, where he made a good record and is now a traveling salesman and is a young man of much promise. Grant Agnew began farming when a young man, and this has been his vocation ever since with the exception of four years, when he worked as a commercial traveler. He is now owner of a fine improved and valuable landed estate consisting of 260 acres all tillable with the exception of 60 acres, which is in timber. It is well tiled, well fenced and otherwise improved in an up-to-date manner. T his is the old home place of his mother, and he has kept it well tilled and the buildings in excellent repair and is making a pronounced success as a general farmer and stock raiser. Politically, Mr. Agnew is Democrat and he was at one time superintendent of roads in the township, giving satisfaction to all concerned in this capacity. He belongs to the Christian Church. -- typed by kbz
