Homer Elliott January 9, 1878 in a log cabin in Martin County Indiana
to Jacob and Mary Elizabeth Littell Elliott. After teaching four yrs
and attending Indiana University School of Law. Homer practiced law and
was a deputy prosecutor for the Owen-Morgan County Circuit Court and
nominated for both prosecutor and judgeship. The family moved to Morgan
County in 1918, living in Martinsville until moving to Indianapolis
when Homer was appointed by Courtesy of Tigger Martinsville Reporter, Martinsville IN Courtesy of Tigger Elmer Harding, age 71 years, died at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, January 3, 1956, in the Daviess County Hospital, where he had been a patient less than 24 hours. Mr. Harding became ill three days before his death, suffering a cerebral hemorrhage, which caused his death. Mr. Harding was born in Martin County on August 09, 1884, the son of William and Lavissa (Sutton) Harding. He was married twice, his first wife being Bess Perry. She passed away and he married Moletha Acton, and she died in 1945. He is survived by six sons and a daughter. They are Hubert Harding, of Louisville, Ky., Gene Harding, Inglewood, Calif., Joseph, Donal, Leo, Lee, and Alice Harding, all of Shoals. One son, Ralph, lost his life in World War 2. He also leaves ten grandchildren, and three brothers, Allie Harding, of Shoals, Ollie Harding, of Indianapolis, and the Rev. U.F. Harding, of Arcadia, Fla. He was a member of the old Bethel Methodist Church, and the Eagles Lodge. He served as Clerk of Martin County Circuit Court and at the time of his death was an employee of the State Highway Department. Funeral services will be conducted at the Methodist Church at 10 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. Robert Hawkins and Rev. John Sutch conducting the rites. Burial will be at Spring Hill Cemetery. Calvary community died at 9:45 o’clock Sunday night, September 3, 1939, at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Cecil Price, in Montgomery. Death of the aged man was attributed to a complication of ailments from paralysis and came after two years lingering illness. He had been in a serious condition for the past ten days. Born in Martin county on August 8, 1866, a son of Cyrenus and Sarah (Porter) Walton, the deceased spent most of his life in this community and was well and favorably known. He was a member of the Mt. Calvary Methodist Church. Mr. Walton married Alice A. Crane on February 9, 1888, she preceded him in death in 1927. Surviving children of the union are Harry Walton at home, Robert Walton, Perry twp.; Mrs. Ivan Sims, Dover Hill, Mrs. Charles Harding, Loogootee; Mrs. Roy Hotz, Eagle Grove, Iowa and Mrs. Cecil Price of Montgomery. Mr. Walton was the last of a family of five children but survivors include 21 grandchildren and 24 great grand children. Courtesy of: MaryLou Trego Robert Otis Walton, age 69, of Route 3 Loogootee, died at his home Wednesday, morning, October 19, 1960, at 10:50 a.m. He had been in failing health, but death was unexpected. Mr. Walton, who was widely known in the county, was a retired farmer. He was born November 12, 1890 in Martin County, the son of Garrison and Alice (Crane) Walton, both deceased. On February 11, 1911, he married Della (Wildman) Walton, and she survives. Five children were born to the Waltons. They are Talford Walton, R.R.1, Loogootee, Mrs. Lorena Schnarr, R.R. 3, Loogootee, Mrs. Reva Ledgerwood, Garrison Walton(***accidentally Omitted prior to 9/20/02), Loogootee and Mrs. Addie Van Hoy of Sanborn. There are 19 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He leaves three sisters: Mrs. Blanche Sims of Dover Hill, Mrs. Delphia Price of Bicknell and Mrs. Mina Hotz of Eagle Grove, Iowa. One sister and one brother are deceased. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, October 22, 1960, at the Loogootee Methodist Church with Reverend Earl Allison officiating. Shoals News, 9 Apr, 1954, MRS. TIMA TOW TAKEN BY DEATH Mrs. Tima TOW,
age 82 years, passed away at the home of her son, Russell TOW, at 1:40 p.m.,
Tuesday, April 6. She had been ill for about two years, and in a serious
condition for the past seven weeks. Mrs. TOW was born in Lawrence County, on July 13, 1871, the
daughter of Jessie and Becky (NUGENT) MANN. On October 6, 1889, she was married
to Albert TOW, who has preceded her in death. She is survived by three sons, Merton TOW, Russell TOW and
Albert TOW, and three daughters, Mrs. Grace ASBELL, Mrs. Gladys DANT and Mrs.
Gethel PEOPLES, all of Shoals. Also surviving are 30 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren,
a sister, Mrs. Effie WILLIAMS, of Mitchell, IN, and a half-brother, Lewis MANN,
of Bedford. Mrs. TOW was a member of the Baptist Church. Funeral services will be conducted at the Queen Funeral Home, at 2 p.m., Thursday, with the Rev. Robert HAWKINS in charge of the rites. Interment will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. Courtesy of Sandra Allen Mrs. Grace ASBELL,
age 73 years, passed away at 5:50 p.m. Saturday, April 18, 1970, at the Daviess
County Hospital. She had been ill since January 26. Mrs. ASBELL was born in Martin County on May 31, 1896, the
daughter of Albert and Tima (MANN) TOW. Her husband, Curtis ASBELL, preceded
her in death. She was a member of the Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons, Edward ASBELL, of Shoals, and
Lewis ASBELL, of Loogootee; one grandchild, Stanley ASBELL, of Hammond, IN;
three great grandchildren, one brother, Robert TOW, of Shoals; and one sister,

made in Spring Hill Cemetery. Mr. BEARD died unexpectedly at his residence, at 7:50 p.m.
Friday, October 24, 1975. He was born in Martin County on January 6, 1900, the
son of Isaac and Lucy (FRANKLIN) BEARD. He was married twice. His first wife,
Verna ROSS, died on March 29, 1961, and his second wife, Mary (NICHOLSON) BEARD
survives. Mr. BEARD, a retired town marshal, had served as a marshal
for the town of Shoals for twenty-three years. He was a member of the Nazarene Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Donald BEARD, of Shoals; a daughter, April BEARD, at home; two step-children, Charles DANT and Mrs. Martha PETERS, both of Paoli; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Herschel (Lottie) SALMON, of Shoals. The deceased was the mother of four children, two dying in infancy. Mrs. Savage was a resident of this city for many years, her husband dying about eighteen years ago. Since that time she has made her home with her son, John B. Savage of this city, until the last five years she resided with her daughter Mrs. Rachel Roby of French Lick. The remains were brought to this city yesterday and taken to the residence of her son. Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church this afternoon by Rev. A resident of Loogootee, he was 87. He was born October 14, 1926 in Martin County; the son of William Raymond and Agnes Ophia (Farrell) Norris. He was married to his first wife Patricia Louise (Crooke) Norris and she preceded him in death in 1978. In 1980 he married his second wife Ruth Ann (Norris) Norris and she survives. He was a 1944 graduate of Loogootee High School and a U.S. Navy Veteran. He was a member of the Loogootee American Legion and Knights of Columbus. Jack was a retired city letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann Norris; two sons, Terry and wife Donna Norris of Houston, Texas and Don Lee and wife Tanya Myers of Nashville, Tennessee; one daughter, Dottie and husband Greg Potts of Loogootee; and five grandchildren. Graber and he survives. She is also survived by her parents, Ezra and Esther Graber of Montgomery; in-laws, John J. and Lydia Graber of Odon; two sons, Alva and wife Rhonda (Wagler) Graber of Odon and Amos Graber at home; six daughters, Alice and husband David Ray Graber of Loogootee, Rachel and husband Myron David Knepp of Montgomery, and Ruthie, Laura, Esther and Mary Graber, all at home; three sisters, Rachel and husband Johnnie Graber Jr. of Loogootee, Joan and husband Joseph J. Graber of Odon, and Martha and husband Abraham Graber Jr. of Loogootee; and four brothers, Abraham and wife Wilma Jean Graber, James and wife Norma Jean Graber, Jonas and wife Rosina Kay Graber, and Amos and wife Lydia Graber, all of Montgomery. Lynda Kay Combs died at 9:20 p.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at her home. A resident of Loogootee, she was 71. She was born July 12, 1942 in Daviess County; the daughter of Melvin and Virginia (Jones) Abel. On June 4, 1965 she married Robert Combs and he survives. She was a graduate of Loogootee High School and had attended Vincennes Universityand was a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University. She was a talented artist and loved creating pottery, painting and surrounding herself with family, pets and nature. She and her family lived in Virginia Beach; Honolulu; San Diego; Murfreesboro, Tennessee and Bowling Green, Kentucky. After retirement she and her husband returned to Loogootee. She was a member of Truelove Methodist Church and has served as their pianist for the last ten years. She is survived by her husband, Robert Combs; two sons, John
and wife KimberlyCombs and Stephen and wife Kelli, all of Bowling Green, Kentucky;
one daughter,Leslie Combs and her partner Debbie Foushee of New Albany;

Betty J. Armes died at 5:08 a.m. Saturday, August 17, 2013 at Brookside Village. A resident of Loogootee, she was 84. She was born December 18, 1928, in Griffin; the daughter of Wilburn W. and Mary Francis (Rachaels) Houchins. A 1947 graduate of Alfordsville High School, she had worked on the assembly line at RCA. She was a member of Alfordsville Christian Church and a former member of Eastern Star. She sang in the church choir and enjoyed crocheting. She is survived by her husband, Hubert N. “Red” Armes, whom she married October 23, 1948; two daughters, Vicky (Michael) Caraher and Denise Merrimon; grandchildren, Tracy (Kurt) Lorey, Julie (Glenn) Durcholz, Kelly (Randy) Lechner, Nathan Murphy, Ryan (Tina) Kraft, Sarah Kraft (Brian Favreau); a brother, Charles (Pat) Houchins; nine great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by an infant son, Mark Armes; a son-in-law, Kenneth Merrimon; and a sister, Barb Johnson. Russell E. Edwards went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 17, 2013 at Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper. A resident of Shoals, he was 88. He was born April 22, 1925 in Daviess County; the son of William H. and Esther (Harker) Edwards. He graduated with the Alfordsville Class of 1943. Early in his career, he traveled for Wyatt Seed Company of Petersburg. He later represented Carolina Shoe Company of Morganton, North Carolina, traveling three states. He was a faithful member of the West Shoals Church of Christ and was the song leader until his illness. He was a member of a vocal quartet and sang at many funerals and weddings. He also taught acapella singing throughout congregations in southern Indiana. Other special interests were antique cars and tractors, especially, Hudson and Essex models. He was also an avid reader of history. He married the love of his life, Naomi R. (Davis) Edwards on June 29, 1952. They were blessed with one daughter Sara, and her husband, Michael Caylor of Collierville, Tennessee; a son Dr. Mark, and his wife, Jane Edwards of Zionsville; four grandchildren, Lauren C. Caylor, Andrew J. Edwards, and wife Elly; Lindsey L., and her husband, Stephen Livesay, and Abigail L. Edwards. He is also survived by one sister, Lenora and Donald Stultz of Bedford. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Douglas J. Edwards in 1979, and three brothers, Friedman, Robert and Leland Edwards. Wednesday, January 18, 1984, at his residence, following a five-year illness. The son of Thomas J. and Laura (Henderson) Allbright, he was born January 8, 1895, in Martin County. He married the former Christie Batchelor on November 1, 1919, and she survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Evelyn Winkel, of Elnora, and Mrs. A.L.
(Novella) Luck of Shoals; and three sons, Robert D. Allbright, Morris
Allbright, and Ronald K. Allbright, all of Shoals; 16 grandchildren; 21 great
grandchildren; and one great great granddaughter. One daughter, two
grandchildren, five brothers and five sisters preceded him in death. He is the
last of his immediate family. Mr. Allbright was a retired farmer, a former trustee advisory board member
for Halbert Township, a member of the Weisback Community Church, and a veteran

with neighbors Friday morning, Mrs. Nancy Ann CLIFTON, 77 years old, wife of
John CLIFTON and who was one of this city's best known and highly esteemed
women, died at her home in West Shoals about 3:30 o'clock Friday afternoon. Mrs. CLIFTON had been in her usual health before suffering the stroke, and
her sudden passing was quite a shock to her family and numerous relatives and
friends. Mrs. Clifton was born in this county, June 30, 1867, the daughter of Hugh
and Mahulda (CHAPMAN) MEFFORD, and spent her entire life in this community. Surviving besides her husband are two children, Mrs. Cora GERKIN, of this
city, and Everett CLIFTON, of Loogootee, seven grand children and three
brothers, John, William and Rollie MEFFORD, all of Huron. Funeral services for Mrs. Clifton were held in the Methodist church here at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, with interment following in Spring Hill cemetery. Charles Leonard Norman
Charles Leonard Norman died at the home of his mother, Mrs. Jas. Ballard in Halbert Township, Wednesday, May 31, 1922 after a long illness.
He was born January 3, 1897, being at the time of his death 25 years, 4 months and 28 days of age. He was a son of the late Henry Norman.
He served in the World War in Battery B, 67th Field Artillery.
He was married to Floy Buzan November 25, 1918. To this union was born one children Leonard Morton Jr. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife and child, mother, stepfather, five brothers, Sherman, Dewey, Jacob, Henry and George; three sisters, Minnie, Louisa and Blanche, and a host of relatives and friends, his father and two sisters having preceded him to the great beyond.
He was of a kind and loving disposition with a kind word and ready smile for all. We sorrow not as those who have no hope as our loss is Heaven's gain.

James H. Salmon James H Salmon, age 76 years, was found dead in his bed
about 10:30 AM Tuesday morning by his daughter, Mrs Isol
Goldsberry. Mr Salmon had been in failing health for over a year,
but his death was unexpected. He had been dead since early morning. Mr Salmon was born in Martin County of September 17,
1881, the son of Rev. William Salmon and Elizabeth (Westfall) Salmon. His
wife the former Alpha Morrison, has preceded him in death. He was a farmer and a
Rawleigh salesman. Mr Salmon is survived by
one daughter, Mrs Isol Goldsberry, and one grand-daughter, Mrs Alpha Dean

News April 1979 Mrs Nicholson was born on
May 2, 1911 in Shoals to James H. and Alpha (Morrison) Salmon. She
married Irvin Nicholson in 1959 and he survives. She was a retiree of the
Loogootee Textile Company, a member of the Shoals American Legion Auxiliary,
Post No 61 and the Eagles Lodge Auxiliary No 2442. Surviving, in addition to
her husband, are a daughter, Mrs Alpha Dean Bough of Dallas, Texas; and three
grandson. In addition to her parents, one sister has also preceded her in
death. Funeral services will be
held at 1:30 PM Wednesday (today) at the Queens-Lee Funeral Home with Rev.

(Salmon) Nowling age 49 years were conducted at the Queen Funeral home at 2 PM
Sunday with the Rev. Robert Hawkins officiating. He was assisted by the
Rev. Lloyd Butler. Pallbearers were Roy
Salmon, Ray Tredway, Paul Salmon, Joseph Bough, Hale Salmon and Gary
Salmon. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery. Mrs Nowling was born in
Martin County on June 8, 1908, the daughter of James Salmon of Shoals and Alpha
(Morrison) Salmon deceased. On September 7, 1946 she married
Willard Nowling, who survives. Mrs Nowling passed away at
her home, 2495 North Central Ave, Indianapolis, IN at 3:45 PM Thursday.
She had been in failing health for siz years and seriously ill for ten weeks. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and prior to her illness, was an employee of the Indianapolis City Water Company. 12 1915 Shoals, IN Nancy Ann, daughter of Leonard and Sarah Acre was born in Alabama in 1820 and was united in marriage to Moses Denny in 1851. To this union were born 6 children, Mrs T C Wilson and George Denny of this place, Mrs Rachel Higbee of Friendship, Wisconsin, James Denny of French Lick and John Denny of Washington, Indiana, and two sons Leonard and Anderson Gray by a former marriage. She departed this life March 6, 1915 being at the time of her death 89 years, 1 month and 27 days. "Aunt" Nancy united with the U. B. Church when she was quite young and was true to her faith in every sense of the word. Asleep in Jesus blessed sleep from which none ever wake to weep. For several years she has made her home with her daughter Mrs T. C. Wilson. Aunt Nancy was a kind wife and a loving mother and was loved by all who knew her. She will be greatly missed in our community.. Her husband and two children preceded her to the great beyond. She leaves beside her children 40 grand children, 31 great grandchildren and 1 great great-grandchild. Funeral services were conduction Monday at the home of her daughter Mrs. T. C.
